Was it, perchance, overuse by a minority of people?

araban is an exception because he actualkly contributes a lot, but im sure even then he has more than he should have. i took the liberty of searching other users who have a lot of likes.
HKA - 51 likes and i only see maybe 1 post that deserves likes, out of 13 posts that have likes.
wms - ok there are obvious reasons he gets a lot of likes but still no real contributions to the forum from the posts that have likes
topazg does better but still some posts that arent contributing anything, same with joaz
that was just some quick skimming cause i got bored.

like that. the topic serves no purpose but to pass around likes (which is already a bad idea but i wont get into that) and to inflate post count. though was off-topic posts already turned off? yes theres a similar topic but it hasnt reached that low of a level yet. it still serves little purpose.
what needs to be done is that a spam forum should be added, where people who are into not contributing anything at all can have their little fun (and post count would not increase of course) while off topic should contain posts with actual use and discussion.
alternatively, set some regulation on the forum.

*edit.
I guess I'll remove him from the list again, because it's basically this, and only this, whole threat that is so annoying.

xDragon has a valid opinion, though very poorly delivered. I suspect he's regarding this forum and community as if it were a type of newsgroup, though it is far more dynamic (and complicated) than that. That somewhat skewed perspective makes for a frustrating time using this forum, I agree.
While I agree that dealing with an abrasive and disruptive opinion is difficult, it doesn't really help with a page of comments and jabs, a number of which are made by members who don't seem to have anything to say over and above the same repeated thoughts. It somewhat feels like mob rule in this thread, I'm sorry to say.
Don't get me wrong, most people have been generally polite, and are only trying to correct xDragon's misconception of the functionality of various portions of the forum. It just felt like 10 vs 1 or something. I think that posting over and over again how xDragon is wrong is pointless.
For the record, I disagree with xDragon on both the use of the Off Topic forum and the Like functionality. I doubt that will sway him, though.

I see forums in general as primarily a social thing. People come here to chat with fellow go players about whatever they want. Whether it's serious go discussion or "Hey look at my 100th post!", so what? There's room on the forum for both. And if I like to see people cheer for themselves in their 100th post, so I click the "like" button for that, then how is that doing anybody harm?
Let's just have everybody enjoy the forum in whatever way they choose and not worry about "oh, so-and-so's post count is high just because of his daily posts about his lunch" or whatever.
