Go Set for Sale

Post by vash3g »

I am doing this for a friend and the information comes from him. It all looks accurate to me and I can provide pictures if you have any questions about it.

Purchased directly from Kuroki Goishi in Spring 2007. Taken very good care of by a fellow go member (owner was in Korea for the few couple years).

Board: Hyuga Kaya table board, three-piece composition, 6.15cm/2.5in thick. Subtle natural dimples from occasional play.

Stones: Size 34 Moon Grade stones. All stones accounted for. Hyuga clam shell and Nachiguro slate stones.

Bowls: Karin Extra Large

He is looking to sell for $900 but I am allowed to negotiate on the price some.

I live in Rochester, NY for regional sales but can ship. I will be going to the Maryland Open in a couple weeks if you are going to be in that area for the tournament and are looking for a nice set.
Decisions are made by those who show up.

To quote Tevia from Fiddler on the Roof

"If I were a rich man..." Sounds like a nice set.

Hello,
I won't be able to buy it (have my own ^_^) but it sounds like a nice set.

Have your friend send you some pictures you can post. You'll get a lot more replies that way.

I also recommend checking for clubs in your local area to see if anyone locally is interested.

Stones: Size 34 Moon Grade stones. All stones accounted for. Hyuga clam shell and Nachiguro slate stones.

I'm guessing you mean "product of Hyuga" and not "Special product of Hyuga." Big difference ;) If these stones were a special product that would be an awesome deal! They tend to retail at about $15,000 ^_^

Anyway, good luck selling your friend's set!

One is produced from Mexican clamshells imported to Hyuga before being made into clamshell stones. The other is produced from Hyuga domestic clamshells which is very difficult to find in the right sizes.

The stones made from clam shells harvested off the coast of Southern California (Mexico) and those made from clam shells harvested off the Okuragahama beach in Miyazaki (Hyuga) Japan are quite different. The Japanese clam shells are distinguished by their color and density and by the fineness of the lines in the shell. The two types of shell age differently, too, with the Mexican shell tending to take on a slightly tan color and the Japanese shells remaining white. As with so many things, the clam shells off the coast of Miyazaki prefecture were over-harvested and suitable shells for making go stones are quite scarce. This is reflected in Kuroki Goishi Ten's price of 700000 yen (around USD $8000) for a set of yuki (snow) grade 8.8 mm stones made from Miyazaki shells.

Now that I've finish a large project I have a little time to comment on the different qualities of Go equipment. I'll be posting a guide here in the next few days that'll have a detailed description of Hyuga stones vs. Mexican stones. I hope you'll find it useful :)
