Att: Anders; Re smartgo book (by Yoda Norimoto)

Post by kupus »

Hi Anders,

Charles Matthews pointed out that printed book Vital Points for Skillful Finesse and Sabaki has some wrongs diagrams

" While the book is quite useful, some of the diagrams are not. There are errata in problem diagrams 21, 32, 41, 42, 48, 50, 57, 58, 59. I found these by comparing with the Japanese original. Some of these are serious."

Is that corrected in smartgo book, or everything is the same as in the original?

Thanks, D

I can't speak for Anders and SmartGo, but I know Chris Greene at Hinoki (the publisher) has been aware of the errors for a long time, and had even been including an extra page listing the errata as an insert in the book. He would certainly have told Anders and John about them, so I highly doubt the original errors would be in the SmartGo version of the book.

You might find it easier to contact Anders directly: http://smartgo.com/support.htm

It can be really hard to keep track of things on 5-10 different websites, so try emailing him maybe?

Sabaki's just been reprinted by the way. Those errors have been fixed and the page weight and binding have been improved.

Hinoki shipped the new books to us this week, and we'll have the second edition in stock any day now.

That was one of the earliest books we converted to SmartGo Books, and if memory serves we did correct those diagrams. For every book I convert, I check SL to see if there's an errata page. The original author and/or publisher is consulted if there's any ambiguity.

An advantage of SmartGo Books is that any errors that aren't spotted before publication can (and will) be corrected. When the app is updated, the latest version of a book automatically appears to all who have purchased it.

Thanks David and imabuddha.

One of the reason I posted question here is that I assumed somebody else would be interested in that info too.

BTW, Information about 2nd, corrected, edition should be posted on senseis.

Again, thanks for your replies, much appreciated.

To be able to do it, he needs the Japanese original. I have the first edition of the book and can't tell where or what the mistakes are. I guess the publisher did their work by putting out a second edition, but not everyone is in a postion to post such corrections.
Patience, grasshopper.

Help would be appreciated.

I was curious as well.

This one makes the most sense title-wise.

Yes, that's probably it. The phrase "skillful finesse" is apparently how Terry prefers to translate tesuji.
Although it is an ordinary word (for, say, the line in the palm) it has a specialized use in Japanese as technical jargon in the game of go. We usually translate this as "skillful finesse," but how would that work in the title of this book? "Skillful finesse and Anti-finesse of Go" would be awkward, unclear and also incorrect.
So Terry agrees that "skillful finesse" is awkward, unclear and incorrect, but nonetheless...
