Beer

Post by Shinkenjoe »

As i discovered a new fine Helles recenty i thought i'd do some beer review thread.

The new one is called "Riegele Urhell". It's brewed in Augsburg. Didnt think the Swabians can brew at all. I've been taught better.

Image

Its quite quaffable, but not too much. That Quaffablelyness is something that has to come in the right dosis. I don't like the Bavarian Water Helles, like the all praised Tegernseer or even Kitzmann. Last year Möchshof tried to copy them, and they really put into the "Bavaria Light" all what is bad about these Bavarian Helle. But with good luck not all Helle from the deep south follow this tradition. So the Riegele has the right bit of aftertaste that i like.

To clarify my taste i'll name some of my preferred beers.

Above all comes the Hübner from Steinfeld near of Bamberg.
http://www.huebner-braeu.de/
Some friends of mine don't like it. It got the reputation to be a matter of taste, as there is some special aftertaste. I just can swear to it.

Image

Then there is the Export from Ott.
http://www.brauerei-ott.de/ This one is famous for it's balanced taste.

Image

With the Pilseneres I stick to the bitter ones like Lübzer (http://www.luebzer.de/) or even Jevers (as you can get it everywhere). Im no expert on Pilsners though and i must confess that i liked the times as there was Wicküler for a cheap price everywhere.
Image

I dont like either Weißbier nore Bockbier or Alt. Im totally ignorant of all th Belgish beer that is around there, but hopefully a holiday will fix that some time.

The worst beer i drank was a Russian Starkbier. They just mixed Wodka in, to get 9 percent.

What are youre favourites?

Well, I'm out in Oregon, but I don't hold with this IPA craze, give me dark beers

Mother of all Storms, Barleywine aged in Bourbon Barrels... course with 14% ABV, it's difficult to remember exactly what it tastes like :P

Rogue brewery is local, and honestly I can't say much for this after it's bottled, but on tap it's stellar

I rarely drink these days due it really not mixing well with my medication but in recent years I've favoured red ales such as the Rebel Red done by my local craft brewery/brewpub: http://www.franciscanwellbrewery.com/products.html

Unfortunately, outside of a few pubs it's hard to find anything other than what passes for lager in this country from the commercial outfits and a few types of stout, Guinness, Murphies occasionally Beamish, none of which agree with me well. Then, generally speaking you go to Ireland for the whiskey (not the same as whisky! :P) rather than the beer.

Personally, I usually go for the Guinness. Yum yum.

We also have a bunch of great breweries around the state here (Montana represent!) - so I'll add the Bozone Amber, Copper John Scotch Ale, Pigs "Anus" Porter.

This is what my pops drinks more than anything. For me, it's a good match with fried chicken or Buffalo hot wings,

There are arguably better Irish stouts out there than Guinness, sourcing them outside of Ireland is very difficult though. More problematically, getting a correctly poured pint of Irish stout can be hard, I've seen Guinness poured as you'd pour a lager in Britain.

Yep, it's really 14% alcohol by volume... It's limited release, so usually we travel to Pacific City, OR to pick up a few bottles, drink the newest release and camp out there.
