Scoring - Could someone tell me how these are being scored?

Post by test354 »

And what does 'White Player (White) has won this game with a score of 83 (bounded by 83 and 83)' mean?

I've read the rules of scoring extensively, and can not make sense out of how this program at the end of game is scoring everything.

Is this Japanese or Chinese?

The first image below is from a 9x9, and the total score is 83... How is that possible when there are only 81 intersections on the board?

The second image below is even more perplexing to me. It's a 19x19 and the total won score is 147.5. I counted the territories and it just doesn't add up.

Both links are the same - pointing to a 9x9 board.

The 83 points come from:
30 dead black stones
30 points from intersections after the dead stones are removed.
12 points of open territory
11 prisoners.

The 83 is more than 81 because the 2 handicaps stones give two extra points captured.
Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

It works with Chinese scoring, too.
There white owns the whole board (=81 points) and gets one compensation-point for each handicap stone (=2 points)

I'm using as a reference this link: http://www.online-go.com/faq.php?name=rules

Here's the image of its example board: http://www.online-go.com/images/faq/example_board.gif
Dead Stones:
If a stone or group of stones are clearly dead, and both players are aware of this, the game will normally finish by agreement with the stones left on the board. In this case, the stones are then marked as dead and treated as though they have been captured.
In Japanese rules, white's total score would be:
16 (territory) - 2 (captured stones) + 6 (komi) = 20
If you're subtracting captured stones from the territory, then won't you get a negtative outcome?

My 9x9: 12 (territory) - 30 (captured stones) + 2 (komi) = -16

What am I missing here?

Yes, in theory you are right about the potential negative. But as it is only the difference in score that matters it is usual to count the stones as being positive for white instead of negative for black. The end result is the same.
