Chinese Professional Rankings
How do Chinese professional rankings work exactly? It seems quite confusing when a 3 dan or 5 dan wins a tournament, then get promoted to 9dan. Compared to Japan, where A) 5dans don't beat 9dans and B) the rise to 3dan to 9dan isn't permitted to be so abrupt.

Sensei's page on the "new" ranking system says:
Promotion to 9 dan
For this and other promotions, only one requirement must be met.
Win Kisei, Meijin, Honinbo or an international title
Win Judan, Tengen, Oza or Gosei, twice
Win 200 games as an 8 dan

A) Happens regularly
B) 9d is uncommon but 3->7 happened very quickly for a newcomer making it into the Honinbo league.

Also a 4d promoted to 7d for same reason

I don't know much about the Chinese professional ranks but your assumptions on Japanese go are very strange.

Re: Chinese Professional Rankings
I believe that the only way to attain 9 dan in China is to either win or get second place in an international tournament.
