studying go in china

Post by otenki »

hey guys,

Some of you might be wondering what it is like to study go in china.(the "system" of Guo Juan)
I've been studying for about 6 weeks here in china (I will be here for total of 2 months).

I just thought I'd share my blog with you, maybe some of you will find it intresting.
I know I would have loved to see a more modern blog than the one she is having linked on the website (from 2006) before I would go.

Here it is:
http://strongatgo.com/

Enjoy :-),

Interesting, thanks for the blog!

Do you just get Tesuji problems to solve? No Life-and-Death?

Thanks!

In the beginning we just got Tesuji problems. The idea behind this is that our shapes would get better.
We would learn to see all the aji that is left in certain shapes. Howhever we still make so many mistakes in our shapes :-)

Now I'm getting a mix of tesuji, life and death and endgame.
In my free time I'm doing the Lee chang ho life and death and tesuji which is also very interesting!

Cheers,

in your double knight's approach and the teacher's recommendation for 3-3 instead of trying to push out -- won't you still live cramped even smaller?

in the book, Breakthrough to Shodan, there's a similar example of a corner handicap stone being surrounded by triple kikari, and the author says that even though black can live with a 3-3, he shouldn't.

Hey,

Black needs to dive into 3-3 to make some kind of stability for the group.
He will NOT be surrounded, this is exactly what white wants black to think by playing this trickplay.

Mostlikely sequence: (the one that the teacher showed us)

This is good enough for black (he ignored an approach to the 4-4).

I forgot some of the variations that come after this but the main point is that white cannot cut without dying himself.

otenki, thank you for sharing the blog. 'Fundamentals' is jibengong, not jibendong in your September 14, 2013 (#3) blog. :)

Thanks :-)
Yeah, this was when I did not hear this word a lot yet.
Now, at least once per week we hear "jibengong bu hao..." ;-)

Hi otenki, on your October 11, 2013 blog, the 3-stone game -- was that the entire game (was :b74: was the last move? ) or was there more to it ?

Teacher resigned at this point because white cannot attack the black group. If he does the top group will die. (If I would have played the empty triangle). I did not play the empty triangle but for him the sequences before were a better game than I played before so he rewarded me by resigning here I think.

However the game is still even when I don't make the empty triangle, the group just can now also be chased which leads to a little bit more territory for white on the upper side I guess.

Cheers,
Otenki
