Hello From West Midlands

Post by FlyingCrane »

Hello all

I have just recently discovered and starting playing go though mainly on Many Faces Of Go v12 against the bot, haven't got round to playing on KGS or any other server yet.

Just been using a couple of go books to teach myself the basics so far.

Enjoying the forums and looking forward to understand go in more depth one day :)

Welcome to L19.

On KGS, go ahead and play people too. You'll get a wider variety of experience. Playing only bots can teach you bad habits.

Welcome. As a former resident of the West Midlands I understand where you are from. But I am wondering if the majority of people here are a little confused as British players are probably in the minority.
Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

Even the British themselves appear a bit confused as to the exact meaning of 'West Midlands'

I think that it is nuts. :)

There's a tournament in Coventry (see http://www.britgo.org) tomorrow, so why don't you come along - to watch and meet others, even if not to play...

We're not confused - we know exactly what we mean, and these aren't the only usages of the term "West Midlands" in England.

It's just these words mean different things in different contexts, just like the rest of English. Most words have multiple meanings (see any good dictionary)...

Nuts are for monkeys.

Joaz knows what you mean. He is from California and that also has multiple meanings. If you speak English it is an economic sinkhole in the western part of the country. If you speak Spanish it is the northernmost province of Mexico. ;-)

Oh, and I thought nuts were to stop bolts from dropping out.
