I've been seeing this option over the last year or so. Mostly with limited release movies. It makes sense for lower budget movies as it is very expensive to get into theater and also the competition is insane. I love the theater but this is the type of movie I would more likely want to watch at home. It's the old saying "adapt or die". Basically the idea is that some will go to the theater no matter what but the vast majority of people want to stay home so let's do both and get a return for our investors in the shortest period of time possible.

What appears to be the best way to reduce casual piracy is too remove as many barriers as possible between the content and the customer's wallet. The old days of the content producer being able to milk the produce through theatre, then rental and then finally retail releases are pretty much over, it's not uncommon to see major film blu-rays appear within a handful of months of a film now where it used to be one to one and a half years before this would happen 10 years ago. It's a much smarter plan now to try and sell the film directly to the consumer as fast as possible to net the fans, then trickle in income through Netflix/whatever over the long run which is the opposite of the old way of doing things.

Not that this film won't be pirated, probably before theatre release or anything. But it's hard to see (if the movie is decent/good) them not making more money by selling early than by giving people six months to twelve months to give in to downloading it off Pirate Bay or whatever.

It's a good convenience thing. There's some content I may pirate, specially if it is the only way to get it digitally and I need it in that format. But if I can pay a reasonable sum to get it legally, I rather do the right thing and purchase, even if it is just to avoid the hassle of sorting through thousands of crappy illegal pages. I guess this is capitalist laziness or something

Actually, I forgot the other point wineandgolover, there are plenty people who would opt far more prefer to hand over money for a cinema ticket than a blu-ray or internet download. Even with a very good home setup there definitely is a difference with watching it on the big screen. So it's not that painful to release an internet download version immediately, it won't cost you all your cinema tickets but it might pick up some cash from people who never go to the cinema but who would torrent the movie instead if there were no legitimate way to watch it at home.

Movie companies fought movies ending up on television for many years out of a fear that people would stop going to the cinema, they relented and (most) released their back-catalogues onto TV after seeing that cinema numbers weren't particularly effected by television because most people seem to go to the cinema as much for the cinema experience and the night out as they do for the movie.

Edit: I should say that I'm talking about movie releases, rather than lower tier cinemas rerunning older movies, the latter were killed off by television to a large extent though most of what I've read on this thinks they weren't going to survive much longer anyway.

Can't wait to buy this film on Blu-ray. Amazon says it will be released Feb. 11, 2014. Or maybe I can wait until it reaches $10-$15.

Brooklyn Castle is documentary on a young chess team that really connects with young audiences. It'll be interesting to see how Life of a King compares.

You can come real close at home. You need to sit away from the screen about the same distance as the width of the screen. Powerful audio helps, as does Blu-ray. Only the most consistent (and high) streaming speed combined with proper encoding will be a decent substitute for Blu-ray.

To get the real Theatre Experience(tm), pour coke and popcorn on the floor, invite your neighbor's kids over to talk through the movie, don't pause the movie for any reason, and flush $20 per person in the room down the toilet. Actually nevermind the money/toilet, you've already spent it on the system

This looks really good and makes me want to start playing Chess again. I quite playing chess because I have no one to play with and it felt like people cheated to much on the web. (They may not have actually been cheating....I just lost every game and didn't think I could be 'that' bad lol).
