The Nihon-Kiin ebook store

Post by Ember »

Hello everyone,

I stumbled upon the Nihon-Kiin ebook store and wanted to try it out. As my Japanese is at the moment still pretty limited*, I was wondering if anyone here has a user account there and could explain the registration process? I'd very much appreciate any help here. :)

Best wishes!

* Yes, I know what some of you might think: Doesn't understand enough of the language to register but wants to download Japanese ebooks. Well, I've wanted to learn Japanese for quite some time and have started recently (again) with some material here, but something Go-related would provide great motivation (and is my primary goal in understanding Japanese anyway). Even though there are the news to start with on the Kiin's website, I'd also like to tackle some other kinds of texts such as game analyses, solutions to problems (of course after trying to solve the problems myself ;-) ) or the like and Shukan Go isn't exactly expensive to start with there. :)

I use it regularly for getting Go World and Shukan Go. If you're having trouble, it would be easiest to know how far you're getting with google translate or your own Japanese skills and where you're stuck. You can add screen grabs. The only thing I don't remember for sure is if you'll need to input a real Japanese address at some point in the process.

I also started with an existing nihon kiin id from Yugen no Ma (Japanese wbaduk), so it may also be slightly different than I remember as well.

There are a lot of good resources there.

Thanks for your quick reply, oren!

I'm trying to use Google translate to get through to the process but as the text of step 1 on this page is a picture, I cannot copy and paste it for Google translate and therefore I'm a bit clueless right from the start... But I'm doubting very much that I'm on the right page anyway by now, I guess I'm at the normal login page. However, I couldn't find a registration page, only a page with a form for inquiries which doesn't look 100% right, too..

From that page you want the big green button with the pencil mark to create a new account.

"日本棋院IDご利用には会員登録(無料)が必要です"

And the button says this.

"新規会員登録はこちら"

Thanks for sending me in the right direction, oren! I had a look at that page and it was more like what I expected. But I fear that I won't be able to register because you have to enter at least a Japanese ZIP code... Is there an alternative or did you make one up?

I used a friend's address for it. I'm not sure anything has ever gotten mailed to it. You could always have fun and register with the Nihon Kiin mailing address and see what happens. :)

Since yesterday was another matchday in the German Bundesliga, I didn't get to come back to registering an account until now. But I think I got it now, yay! (I didn't dare using the Kiin's adress but found a nice sushi bar in Osaka to help me out instead - although they'll surely get suspicious if they ever look at my data as I sometimes had no real plan what they wanted from me (adresses in Japanese are hard). But whatever, it worked! :D Now it seems like I have to accept some kind of terms of service for the e-book shop. Do you remember that, oren..? Here is a screenshot:

My greatest fear now is that I sign up for some kind of subscription I don't want to have (and which might get sent to the sushi bar instead of to me XD). But until now I didn't type in any payment info, so I should be safe.. for now. :blackeye:

I have never tried creating an account there, but it just looks like a regular terms of service - no subscriptions mentioned.

Imo, you should just make you translate explanations next to check boxes, and all should go well... good luck!

(You can get Japanese e-books from amazon too, but I'm not sure if the selection is the same.)

None of the Nihon Kiin books are available as Kindle books unfortunately. A lot of the Mycom published books are though and Igo Kouza from NHK is now as well.
