Making art of the game itself

Post by happysocks »

Have always found hand drawn diagrams (like we see in old go books) with the kanji on the stones dazzling and thought it would be brilliant to have a full size canvas of an elegant position from a favorite game (effecting a rich picture from that which is already art in and of itself). Beyond commissioning an artist, wonder if it'd be feasible to create a symbol typeface or something (know nothing of printing) where you could make lovely prints of this type for people in a cost effective way. Any thoughts?

Maybe you could pick up a set of plastic stones and use some kind of transfer paper to print the kanji onto them. Then arrange them on your board with whatever game record you like and take some photographs (perhaps with an aerial view). Adjust the pictures to a sepia or black and white tone and it would definitely look beautiful.

The only truly cost effective way I can think of might be to learn photoshop or pov-ray and do it all digitally. Either way, that's a great idea.

Maybe you could even offer it as a service. Someone's game record, available as a lovely print. Or if you went the digital route, just upload the production files so anyone could do it themselves.

A very interesting idea. The game does lend itself to beauty in so many ways. We had a new player not long ago play and she had to continue to hold the Yunzi stones just because they were cool.

Regarding a print I would speak with computer artists. One can also experiment with the idea.

We play because we enjoy the beauty of the game, the snap and feel of real stones, and meeting interesting people. Hope to see ya there! お願いします!

Mmm good suggestion mbv, then one could run the files to a shop if they want a large print made on quality material I suppose. Unfortunately have no time to learn photoshop atm but it would be a worthwhile project and fun to play around with to get the designs dialed in. May take it up someday if no one else has.

Right? Perhaps it's in part because the properties of go and the shapes created in the game can feel so organic.
