new player guide

Post by Duckslammer »

I've written a short new player guide, hope anybody finds it useful enough to recommend.

Feedback appreciated.

I like it because it's clean and it's not much text/info. I think it's important not to overburden new ones with the whole universe of Go information ^^

But I'd highly recommend to make the font taller and use one without serifs. And I would maybe add http://tsumego.tasuki.org/ as a further resource for Tsumegos.

Nice work!

Thanks - those were specifically my design goals.

This displays clearly and cleanly with a sans typeface under firefox. I've written it in HTML 1. I'm afraid I'm a bit of a dinosaur, having learned HTML back in the early days and not kept up with the latest. I know the <FONT> tag is deprecated in favor of CSS, but I didn't realize some browsers no longer support it.

If someone would help me with the CSS I'd greatly appreciate it.

I changed the typeface to verdana and added the link you suggested. It should still use CSS but if this works... :-)

Very nicely done.

You might want to mention Guo Juan's Audio Go Lessons Step By Step Course.

Thanks for that - will do!!

I'd also appreciate any suggestions on how to get the word out this guide exists. I've posted also to GoDiscussions (which has since disabled my account due to a software bug - why I ask people to reply here), rec.games.go, my facebook page and several Go-related groups on facebook, and talked to the admins at KGS (who seem lukewarm to the idea for reasons I can't guess at).

saw your post on the AGA Chapter's mailing list

we have a brief KGS tutorial posted on the AGA site too (seems a few of our high dan online tournament players have a little trouble figuring out how to use KGS)... http://www.usgo.org/tournaments/KGSTutorial/

Thanks! If you don't mind I'll clone this, using the beginners' room instead of the tournament room for the examples.

Sorry I was looking at the beginner's study guide pdf (which is also very good) from the link on the page.

Unclear what this is in reference to. None of the resources discussed in this thread have a section 13.1 and any urls to kgs are already specified as www.gokgs.com so far as I can see The 'www' part is almost never necessary however.
