Inflation!!!

Post by DrStraw »

I was looking through an old BGA magazine today. It was the March 1972 issue, so 42 years ago. There was an ad in it for the British go congress. The prices were amazing, even for those days: £4.20 for accommodation (2 nights) and £0.40 entry fee. Meals were £0.43 each. I'm not sure what the exchange rate was at the time (I am guessing around 2.5:1) but that translates to an entire congress, meals and lodgings for less than $20. What is it going to cost to attend this years US Congress in NYC?
Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

It's amazing what high double digit interest rates do to prices (or inflation to interest rates).

If this page is accurate http://safalra.com/other/historical-uk- ... onversion/

£4.20 in 1972 would be £50 today, or about $83.
