How to model a go bowl in Blender?

Post by ejpbruel »

As a hobby project, I'm trying to create a 3d model of a go board + bowls + stones in Blender. Modeling the board and stones is easy enough, but I've been unable to come up with a satisfactory model for the bowls so far.

The bowls I'm trying to create are of the go seigen variety. Are there any specifications/guidelines for the dimensions of such bowls? Alternatively, are there any resources I could use that explain how such bowls are created?

If anyone else ever attemped something similar, I'd love to see your results. In particular, I'd love to hear how you approached the problem.

Thank you in advance for your replies!

Hi ej, would the Utah teapot be of any help? I thought this was a solved problem in the 1970's:

I don't know the dimensions of the bowls you describe. But if I knew them, I would first make the cross-section of the bowl out of bezier curves and place the control points according to those dimensions. Then use the spin tool to lathe it into a complete bowl. Same process for the lid.

I'd be more interested in learning how you built the elaborate legs on the goban. That seems trickier to be than the bowls.

I made a Go set in blender about four years ago, unfortunately all I have left of it is this jpg screenshot (attached).

IIRC this was the same process I used for both the bowl and the legs of the board - the legs were much more complicated and time-consuming but I got it to work eventually. Didn't bother with the lids but the same method should work, although getting the lids to fit the bowls may be a little tricky.

When I have trouble modelling something I always sketch it out in pencil using a kind of volume sketch method.

If you don't know how to draw, I'd highly recommend learning before modelling. You get a great understanding about how things go together.
