this result is bad for Black.
this phrase puzzles me sometimes... because black lives now, no? You're just saying black could've done better than living? Because in the initial variation, I thought black died. How can black do better than living, if he was previously dead (unless, of course, we're talking about the whole board now -- which is a giant unknown. Maybe the rest of the board is settled, and the outcome of the game now hinges solely on this local position)?

Well, of course, the whole board matters.

White gets a play elsewhere in exchange for losing the ko fight. OC, how much that move is worth is a question, but it will generally be less than the value of White's thickness in the hidden position.
Black gets a move elsewhere to let White win the ko, and then another to make the comparison with the other positions where Black moves last. Generally, these two moves will more than make up for not living in the corner.
Depending on the rest of the board, there may be situations where the hidden position is not as bad for Black as others that White can choose, but I still think that we can classify it as bad for Black.

Thanks for the idea Bill, E19 is a cool connection, I've never seen that before and will have to keep it in mind (sort of a reverse monkey jump). It sounds like I have to choose between giving Black aji at B14 or letting Black live.
Here's the whole board position for those interested:

This works if you just want the corner and are okay giving up the outside.
We don't know who we are; we don't know where we are.
Each of us woke up one moment and here we were in the darkness.
We're nameless things with no memory; no knowledge of what went before,
No understanding of what is now, no knowledge of what will be.
