Hello from Denver!

Post by levelonedev »

I started playing a year ago and have tried absorbing all the knowledge I can since then (Hence why I want to stop lurking here and maybe contribute some bad ideas and mistakes). I've managed to barely break 10k in my first year so I'm not so embarrassed of my noobness anymore.

Welcome. Are you playing at a club? There are lots of good players in Denver and Boulder. I used to live there myself many years ago.
Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

Welcome! I live in Littleton and I'm about 10k right now, so let me know if you'd like to meet for a face-to-face game. :-)

Yes! I play at both on and off that happen on Sundays downtown. They've helped me a lot!

@jeromie You should visit some of the clubs downtown on Sundays and then we can play! I won't be at Pablo's tonight but it has a few members!

Pablo's Coffee
630 East 6th Avenue, Denver, CO
Sunday 6 pm - 10 pm

There's also which isn't this Sunday otherwise I'd be at that one today.

The Mercury Café
2199 California St.
1st, 3rd, 5th, Sunday 1:30-5:30pm

I believe the leader of the second club is on the forum but I haven't met him before because there are a lot of players at the second one.

I'll be going to pablo's next week for some games.

I've been to the Mercury Cafe meeting before, but I have trouble getting out consistently on Sunday afternoons. I might be able to make it occasionally over the summer, though.

It's good to know there's someone around my level at the Pablo's gathering, too. Last time I contacted the person leading that meeting the lowest regular attender was around 3k, I think. At the time I was below 12k, so there wasn't really anyone whom I could offer a competitive match.

Hope to meet you over the board soon!

I have trouble with Sunday afternoons too and haven't been to the Mercury cafe as often. I wouldn't call myself a regular at Pablo's either. I attend at best twice a month. There are a few others that show up as irregularly as me that are also SDK and just below 10k.

But! The stronger players have no problem playing a "boring" game with me. Solomon the leader of that club also gives good instruction and is willing to talk about the game afterwards. Losing games to me are just large learning opportunities. I hope to see you there next Sunday.

Bruce here from Fiery Rain of Go Stones (the Mercury-based club):

Always the more the merrier! We meet on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays of each month, so 5/4 is a meet day.

On top of a "decent" attendance last time (considering it was both Easter and 4/20 and a baseball game day so lots going on...) we had a mom bring 2 kids (6 and 7) who were very interested in the game and stayed focused for hours (rare to see). Hopefully they'll be back and we can all help train up some more new lovers of the game!
