Getting into Go [Hard]

Post by FabFab94 »

Hello everony,
ive been lurking around the 19x19 forum for the last couple of days and finally created an account to open this thread.
First things first, i have never played a match of Go in my life so far. Up to now i was really into chess for the last
couple of years. At the moment, ore untill june, i was playing at around 1840 Elo but i somehow got tired of it. I dont know
why exactly im tired of chess after being really into it for a good ammount of time, but thats how it is.

Since im still in love with strategic board games i decided to give Go a shot after some research on the internet on which other
games "like" chess are out there. So For the next two weeks ill try to study and play as much as possible and hope to see some improvement.
You may ask: Whats the purpose of this thread from a guy that doesnt even fully understand the rules yet ? Well, i hope that i can get
some good advice from you guys and i also want to keep track of my improvement for me and maybe for other players who are just starting out.

A little bit about me in the end.
Im 20 years old, coming from germany and just finished high school ( ore the equivalent to high school in germany) and will start
going to a university in 2 month.

Lg=)

(sorry for my bad english, if something is not understandable please let me know)

Hi and welcome.

The best spot for beginners that I'am aware of. It has a virtual rank to see you're improvement whilst you start with 50kyu.
(9dan better than 1d better than 1kyu better than 10kyu better than x>10kyu)

Here the promised link: click

after you learned the basics you could go to a go-server like: KGS

Over at Sensei's Library I wrote a small book guide based on my experience: http://senseis.xmp.net/?SoDesuNe.

Other than that I can recommend goproblems.com.

A bit more comprehensive course (than playgo) can be found at 321go. You need to sign up, but the advantage is that the site keeps track of your progress. There are tons of exercises included, starting from the very beginning.
