Deciding game from US Go Congress?

Post by Uberdude »

This game from the US Go Congress was quite interesting. It was the first loss of favourite Zi-Yang (Matthew) Hu, a 16 year-old Chinese 2p living in Canada who won it in 2011 and 2012; his victor Mark Lee 7d is an 18 year-old Korean former first group insei who will apparently be studying in LA. I particularly liked the way white, when faced with the not totally settled black lower side group, started the fight on the upper side to get a few stones in sente in the middle which then allowed him to kill the lower group. (though if f14 simply defended at h17 what would happen?).

Mark Lee convincingly won his next game against another low dan pro too (no losses so far):

I just now noticed the masters division. No wonder I was so shocked at the lack of the usual suspects in the Open.

He wrapped up the Masters division with an 8-0 record, beating Andy Liu in the final game. Zi-Yang Hu also lost a second game, ending on 6-2. Tough field...

Actually, Mark (Sang Hyeop) Lee wrapped it up with a 9-0 record, his final game (having already defeated 5 of the 8 pros playing in the division) against Shanghai amateur Songyan Jiao.

Matthew (Ziyang) 2p ended with a 7-2 record, as did Cong (Conner) Li 3p
