To save others googling: he is a Starcraft (video game) player and commentator.

Uberdude, thanks. Is it even remotely possibleUberdude wrote:To save others googling: he is a Starcraft (video game) player and commentator.
to ask about Mr. Plott's Starcraft level, approximated in Go terms ?
Is he a kyu-, low dan, mid dan, or high dan or pro level
Starcraft player ? If this question makes no sense,
then forget about it. Just curious.

It appears that he was a pro player for a number of years, and then retired to become a commentator. Now he is working as a game designer.

In Brood War, imo he would be considered a high dan player. He attained a very high rank on ICCUP, the Starcraft ladder, that I would consider to be more difficult than reaching mid-dan level on KGS, and represented the US in WCG various times (WCG being somewhat analogous to WAGC).

This is such great news. He is probably most-well known to newer starcraft players as the host of a show called the Day[9] Daily, in which he breaks down seemingly complex interactions within the game into simple to understand segments. He is a great commentator and analyst. Also, he did this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkzl0zHIE2k. I remember watching that daily live. That was a nice corner of the internet to be in at the time

Is Starcraft like baduk and the Koreans are leagues ahead of the Americans/Europeans?

Yes.
While we have some successful American and European players the most high profile tournament/league (GSL Code S) has only been won by Korenas fo far.
Though the most money is probably made in the states, mostly by Koreans who play there and wreck everyone else.
(But I really haven't followed the scene much in the last ~two years, so this might not be 100% accurate anymore)

He also is a Magic: The Gathering player, done a pro-tour there, but had no real chance. (Was invited for beeing Day9 and not qualifying). He also now hosts Spellslingers on Geek & Sundry, playing that game with mostly famous people or people known from playing magic.
Also I am not that surprised, considering the amount of people I know that combines at least two of Starcraft, Magic and Go.

sorry to dissapoint, but he was never any good. Being a top player on ICCUP NA (which means no korean, yeah), is an achievement alright, but high dan? I mean, he's wasn't even close to the level of koreans practice partners (which are kinda like inseis)
His strength is that he's entertaining, has a huge following, so of course it's amazing that he tweets about go!

High Dan doesn't mean pro. I assume they were saying "amateur high dan"
Tactics yes, Tact no...

I regularly watched Day9's stream during his preparation for the Magic Pro Tour. Poor guy never stood a chance.
