My first 19 game in a while.

Post by tekesta »

I just played a game against COSUMI baduk engine on 8-stone handi. I won by 30 points, but again I made a few mistakes, I'm afraid; I was hoping to win by more than 30. Below is the game record. If any mistakes are found, please comment. Much obliged in advance.

A more general comment. "I won by 30 but was trying to win by more -- what did I do wrong?" That's not a good way to utilize a computer program opponent.

First of all, especially once you reach a level to be playing against one of the MCTS based programs, those are not going to play so as to win by a large margin (or to lose by a smaller margin). They will play as to have the best chance of winning (or of not losing), be it by 0.5 points, 5 points, or 50 points.

Second, you should set the program's playing strength combined with the handicap you take so that you are usually losing. Not such that you lose all the time and not such that you win more than perhaps 1/3 of the time.

In other words, my main comment would be, take fewer stones (or set the program's playing strength higher). You will not learn much if those are such you can beat the program by 30 points.
