I just listened to a speech given at the 2014 US Go Congress and i have to say it was very interesting.

here is the link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HA6HXbxRXnc

i can really advise to watch it!

In the end the speaker requests strong players to live stream their games (for example on twitch.tv). It is done so for many other games and it is very popular. I also think go would greatly benefit if strong players would live stream their games. I know there are plenty of lessons you can watch on youtube. I watch these too but it is just so much more entertaining to watch someone playing live and revealing his thought processes. You feel much more connected and its more fun to watch. Sadly no one does this for go :(. Maybe someone here is willing to stream his games. I think lot of ppl would like to watch it. :)

I don't really get this twitching, twerking thing? I tried to twitch once, but it wouldn't load.

Besides, are games already being streamed live on the Go servers they're being played on? (KGS, Tygem, Pandanet/IGS etc.). I even have my favorite strong players that I like to watch when they're on.

ye, seems like u really dont know what it is ^^.

it is twitch.tv
usually pro gamers stream there. You can see how exactly they play (you see the mouse etc.) and usually they have a webcam on so they can talk while playing and explain why they are doing certain things..

some do this for chess. i and many others hope that strong players would do this for go.

for example there is this one person who at least records her games with the live audio, so you can hear why so was doing what she did. But live on twitch.tv would be even cooler imho. And the author of the speech seems to agree.

1 person does this occasionally for go btw:

The game category itself is fragmented, here are two, there is a 3rd called something like Go/Weiqi/Baduk but I can't find it:

Shout out to twitch star Trump who plays Go for thousands of viewers every once in a while; hope he plays more.

I was thinking the same thing. It didn't seem like the speaker had much of a grasp of the community to me.

I'm not quite following him to his conclusion as well.

For one, the games that make popular e-sports provide constant action in some form. There's always something happening and some bite-sized bit of action or entertainment to be shown. Those games aren't turn-based.

Additionally, games like SC2 or LoL offer the illusion that you might become quite good at them after first trying them, and that you could be competitive within a reasonable amount of time. Go leaves little room for that. You could be studying Go 24/7 for years and most likely still be nowhere near competitive at international, continental or national level.

i have to agree to your points. And i didnt think the speech was amazing, i also think he didnt get everything right.

But still i think go would benefit if strong players stream their games. And for me, i enjoy watching it. thats basically all :)
(given the numbers who follow games via the clients, im sure im not alone on this)

I think the game would benefit if lots of people streamed their games. I would watch SDK's (and DDK's) if they were able to talk reasonably engagingly about their experience during the games.

Edit: I'd like to emphasize that I thought the talk was fantastic. I agreed with pretty much everything he said, and I don't think he got anything materially wrong. I've seen the post-Hikaru decline in go, and I really worry for it's future. Fritz described a vision that I think makes a lot of sense, albeit quite difficult to achieve. I particularly liked his suggestion that we put the emphasis on the game's challenge rather than it's exotic origins - I've seen over and over again how spectacularly unsuccessful that approach is with almost everyone, in particular kids.

I'd like to see more people of twitch too - so maybe I should share my own games first. Does anyone know what is needed to set up a stream?

It's surprisingly hard to figure this out.

Go to your dashboard, and it will ask you if this is your first time streaming, and if so, it will suggest what software you need to install (i.e. the browser alone is not enough).

It has been mentioned elsewhere in the forum but if you haven't seen them, be sure to check out littlelambs channel on youtube, it's great https://www.youtube.com/user/littlelambgo

(similar concept to yharzu's youtube link, strong player who talks whilst playing)

I think it's great that we have this current wealth of high dan amateurs streaming on Twitch and uploading on YouTube.

This reddit thread and the comment by dontlookup link just about all that's available.

Personally, I enjoy nicksib, Haylee, littlelambgo and Dwyrin the most. I'm subscribed to Meepsie and Dragonfist as well, but I haven't watched as much of their content. I look forward to checking those two out more and also have high hopes for Andrew Jackson's SDK class videos.

I don't know if those create more new players then before, but they'll help educate those interested in a better and more diverse manner.
