SGF Editor for Mac?

Post by Sadaharu »

Hi everyone. Any suggestions for good SGF Editor on Mac? I'm currently using GoWrite2, and the good thing is that it comes with a thumbnail viewer so I am able to see the file without opening the file itself. However the bad side is that the editor itself is not very nice to use.

Any suggestions?

I mainly use the one included in KGS. Sente:Goban is 10$ and can edit, but I find it a pain to use but graphics are better than KGS. I just tried GoWrite, and ... well... I find it ugly but usable. If anyone have anything better than that, I would also be glad to know.

And please don't suggest switching to windows. :)

Precisely... GoWrite is too ugly. Even the MultiGo from Windows is much better.

I also use the KGS editor sometimes, but it's a bit annoying because it's run by java and not an app on its own.

I have old version of Sente-Goban, v3.2.12, which is free. I think you can find it on it's old website. My sentiment is same: it is nice look and feel but less usable compared to CGoban.

Usually I use CGoban, except if I want some B&W image (for some Anki card or something) when it is faster to fire GoWrite and take a screenshot. Remember, GoWrite has pattern searching as a nice added bonus (and even works with 9x9 games).

Pattern searching? Really? How do you do that?

First, create a database with files (Options->Game database.)

To search, set your pattern on the board (or a region of the board,) change to select mode (the arrow on the left tool rack,) select the desired region/pattern and either press E or press the Globe+Spectacles icon on the toolbar on top. I'm attaching a screenshot on spoiler tags (since it's likely large) to show the results of a sub-pattern search in my pro 9x9 database (I should add the amateur database someday.)

Wow... cool. I always use Drago to do my pattern search, so I didn't know GoWrite can perform the same thing as well.

Btw, a bit out of topic but, there's a pro 9x9 database? Where can I find it?

I just installed GoWrite. When you said it I didn't think much of thumbnails, but having preview with player names makes it much easier to look for a particular game among a bunch of sgf files. Also it is very smooth when opening multiple files.

A friend of mine scoured all internet looking for pro 9x9. Most come from a NHK TV program, there's the typical Go Seigen and I have a few more I've collected lately from the zen matches. According to him, this is "nag-ware" where we need to push him to share it with someone :D

So after this thread I found out about GoWrite 2 So I installed it and used it to comment on one of my last enjoyable games, just to test the software out. However as I upload the file to EidoGo I got errors. First it just did not upload, opening the file, the first line is empty so this seems to be the issue, or I just pressed the wrong buttom on the upload form.

Then I used the label to put labels on different plays in the game, but those seems to have been lost when I upload it to Eidogo?
