Goban dimension questions

Post by chopper »

According to sensei's library the dimensions of a goban is as follows:

Code: Select all

Dimension                  SI       Imperial      Japanese
                           (mm)       (inch)
 Board width               424.2     16 23/32     1.4  shaku 尺
 Board length              454.5     17 29/32     1.5  shaku 尺
 Board thickness           151.5      5 31/32     0.5  shaku 尺
 Line spacing width-wise    22           7/8      7.26 bu 分
 Line spacing length-wise   23.7        15/16     7.82 bu 分
 Line thickness              1           1/32     0.3  bu 分
 Star point marker diameter  4           5/32     1.2  bu 分
 Stone diameter             22.5        29/32     7.5  bu 分

As the line isn't included in the line spacing, in order to fit the goban width, we'd have the following result:

18 * 22mm (the squares) + 19 * 1mm (the lines) = 415mm

total border width = ( board width - lines+square width ) = ( 424.2 - 415 ) = 9.2 mm

That leaves a given border width of 9.2/2 = 4.6 mm

Are the edges of a goban really only 4.6 mm to the first line? Can someone measure this to confirm?

"Line spacing" is measured between identical parts of two neighboured lines.

Therefore, the thickness of the lines does not matter.

Hello,

Goban size can vary more than you expect.

My goban: shinkaya (japanese maker), thickness: 30mm, total width: 438mm, total length: 469mm, top and bottom edges: 19mm each, left and right edges: 14mm each.

The dimensions specify a line thickness of 1mm.

Did line thickness, line spacing width and lengthwise stay the same besides the more generous edges?

Line thickness are the same in both directions (about 1mm). Line spacing widthwise and lengthwise cannot be the same. They can be computed using goban width and length, respectively (438mm-14mm-14mm)/18=22.77mm for line spacing widthwise and (469mm-19mm-19mm)/18=23.94mm for line spacing lengthwise (from line middle to line middle).

I think that the edge lengthwise width (19mm) is too generous: 14mm or 15mm are probably better.

yes, I was just wondering if any other dimensions were different on your board aside from the over all bigger size, resulting in the bigger edge.

That's good input. Thanks ;)
