Re: Crowdsourcing For New EGF Logo
So the deadline has passed, and they received submissions from more than 50 people, many of whom submitted multiple proposals, for a total of well over 100 logos! Quite successful.
Currently, the EGF is making a first pre-selection to bring that number down to a more manageable levels, after which there will be a vote by the EGF member countries to select the final logo.

Do they say what is wrong with the current logo?
PS>
Reminds me of quite a few years back when the Polish Go Association had the same idea. There were some problems with their logo or something, I don't really remember. The idea did not bear any fruit, mostly due to a few individuals who started creating obstacles where none existed and generally ridiculing the idea. I am glad the European community is more reasonable and less bickersome.

Re: Crowdsourcing For New EGF Logo
The current logo is all but identical to that of the IGF:

Which a lot of people don't like. They would like to have their own logo.
Furthermore, the definition of "Europe" is vague. Israel is an EGF member, but is not technically in Europe. Several other countries are only partially inside Europe (e.g. Russia, Turkey, Kazakhstan). And recently South Africa has applied for membership and is participating in the online European Team Championship.
So there has even been talk the EGF should be the EMEA Go Federation, where EMEA = Europe, Middle East and Africa. Which makes a lot of sense, because the Middle East and Africa share their time zones with Europe, which is becoming more significant with more online play.

As far as I know, the EGF and IGF logo were made by the same person, hence the similarity.

Re: Crowdsourcing For New EGF Logo
Ouf … for me (earning my money with media production), being the same person is NOT A REASON AT ALL to create two nearly identical logos for two different organisations — rather a sign of … laziness, or lack of imagination/creativity/time. The map seems to be some clipart image.Javaness2 wrote:As far as I know, the EGF and IGF logo were made by the same person, hence the similarity.
OTOH, if the EGF is incorporated in the IGF, then all other national/pan-national (?) Go federations in the IGF could also have the same logo, albeit with small differences to show where they really are.
If the EGF sticks with a map in the new logo, it could be a time zone map

Re: Crowdsourcing For New EGF Logo
Well the guy who made them certainly wasn't a graphic artist
I had an idea for an EGF logo, but realised that it was pointless trying to draw it. Art is just not for me. Similarly, the logo for the Irish Go Association, which I made a ugly prototype of, was made by a guy with talent.

It does not look like he made two similar logos because he run out of original ideas.
It looks like he made one logo and then sold it to two different customers. Is that even legal?

Gave it? Presented it? Gifted it?Javaness2 wrote:Sold it? Umm, think again there mate
This is the word you picked on?
Does it matter?...
The end result is - two organizations are stuck with pretty much identical logos. Isn't logo part of branding, something that should clearly distinguish one entity from another and give it a unique presence? Unless it was on purpose, of course...
Still, water under the bridge, really.
Lets look forward. Personally, I think that crowdsourcing a new logo is a wonderful idea.
Just make sure you don't settle for the same logo as, say, Adidas or Coca Cola. Can be trouble.

Re: Crowdsourcing For New EGF Logo
The voting is now in the final stage. Each country member of the european go federation can give 3 votes (3,2,1 points) to their favorite logos.
You can take a look the 5 finalist logos here.
So far only 4 countries sent me their vote, i hope some more will participate in this online voting, deadline is 31st December.

Re: Crowdsourcing For New EGF Logo
I'm not in Europe, so my opinion has no affect on the outcome. But I have to say, none of them impress me. I think the existing one is better than all of them. Only one of them got the response of interesting from me. The other four basically got the response "yuck". How many entries were these five chosen from? Maybe the quality of these explain the lack of votes. Or maybe I just don't have the same aesthetics as European players
Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

Re: Crowdsourcing For New EGF Logo
Those logos are absurdly large pdfs. a logo should be 100 kB or so tops. Can someone make a page with those logos in a realistic size and format for better judgement. If a logo looks awesome in photoshop but crap in a 50 kB gif then it's a crap logo.

Re: Crowdsourcing For New EGF Logo
I'm European and I agree. Creating a logo is hard, though (had quite a few hours invested into Nordic Go Academy's logo, and the result even if OK could be better... But I'm no designer, so, whatever)DrStraw wrote:I'm not in Europe, so my opinion has no affect on the outcome. But I have to say, none of them impress me.
