By the looks of it the round robin will be over by Wednesday, but the tournament is scheduled to run through Saturday. What happens during the last three days?
Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

I haven't posted the bracket yet (cause html tables are really hard)... there's a modified single-elimination tournament that will be seeded by the results of the round robin

Surely this would not involve all the players. If it did then someone who lost all the games in the round robin could, in theory if not in practice, end up as the winner.

That could happen. According to the full rules all 8 players will participate in the 2nd tournament. I think that initial round robin is mostly just to give the players a chance to sniff each other out.

The APQF Round Robin Prelim (RRP) gives each player the opportunity to play with each of the other participants. The results of the RRP will determine the seed order for the APQF Championship.

The "APQF Championship" will be a single elimination tournament.

Amazing how few close games there has been in the first four rounds. Only one game fewer than 10 pts. I am thinking that this shows the big difference between the top four and bottom four players. Maybe there will be more close game in the last two round when they start playing more games within those two groups. Or does it just show that this group of potential professionals are fighters with less emphasis on positional judgment?

and a best of three (but counting previous encounters from the RRP), so even less likely for an unexpected upset

Aha, this is how they are making sure all RR games are important. Pretty cool I like it.

Ryan Li and Eric Lui are undefeated in the round robin phase, and will play each other next. This could effectively be the first game of the finals!

Indeed. Both look to be favorites to make the final, and they have been looking in great form this week.

Looking at the field, some of the other games look important for seeding purposes. Assuming that my calculator is working and that ties are first broken by SDOS (then what?)
  • If Jeremy Chiu beats Ben Lockhart he should capture the third seed on tiebreaks
  • Daniel Gourdeau and Yuan Zhou are currently tied, so the winner will move to a higher seed. If Daniel wins and Jeremy loses his game then I think Daniel gets the fourth seed.
  • I don't think the Ricky/Matthew game matters for Ricky. Even if he wins he looks assured of the eighth seed. If Matthew wins then he moves into a tie for 6th/7th seed but I think that tie requires applying the second-tier tiebreak.

Of course all bets are all if ties are broken by head-to-head results. Should be exciting regardless.
