Dontbtme's YouTube Channel Trailer

Post by Dontbtme »

*** POST EDITED: I replaced my trailer by an improved version ***

Hi everyone!

I spent the whole day making a trailer for my YouTube channel, where I post the streams of my games on KGS, IGS, Tygem and WBaduk (plus OGS at some point)...
I had a lot of fun making it, and it should give some idea of what's on my channel.
Needless to say, I'd really appreciate any feedback on it. :)
Thanks.

Pretty nice. Alternative. Fresh.

You have the kind of voice that suits YouTube*, so we need to hear it! Maybe alter the music volume to when you're not speaking? Alter the volume in different parts?

***edit*** I understand this is a trailer. So... hmm. I just feel that the music is quite loud.

Also, not big on the music in general... I'm more of a Steve Reich guy.

***edit*** the vibe is making me feel like you should have Frontier Psychiatrist.

***a further edit*** I'm not saying that this song is a reflection on you personally.

The animation is... cool. It reminds me of Salad Fingers. Remember that meme? Creepy.

Anyway, I'll subscribe and follow your videos. In general, strong YouTube Go casters are cool no matter the questionable audio choices ;-)

*It's not British nor overly languid American (I'm British and I think our accents make bad YouTube voices in general. But that's probably my tendency to dislike things from my own country. Apart from scotch whisky and the Queen).

Thanks a lot for your feedback, Jujube.
And thanks for making me discover new things: I had a good laugh with Frontier Psychiatrist and Salad Fingers (Wow! you're right, the latter is creepy as hell - a lot more than my trailer, I hope ;-) )
As for Steve Reich (thanks for this one as well), of course I would be glad if I could listen to his work while I'm playing, or to whatever music I want to, but then I'd take the risk of being muted by YouTube (or by Twitch for that matter) because of copyright issues... I tried using the Free Music Archive before, but now I'm using exclusively the Youtube Audio Library, because this way I'm sure I won't have any problem of any kind...
Anyway, I downloaded pieces from Silent Partner because I assumed (wrongly apparently) that his type of music wouldn't really bother anyone and because I found it kind of funny...
And since I always listen to the same playlist in the same order when I'm streaming my games (somehow, it helps me being in the right mood for playing while talking at the same time), the first thing I hear when starting a session is the piece from my trailer, named '7th Floor Tango', so for me it became kind of emblematic of 'the show' even if, to be honest, my videos usually start after it ended :-? ...
Now, concerning the matter of the music being too loud when I'm talking, I agree with you 100 percent  ...
I tried in fact to lower it or raise my voice, while making the trailer, but I was doing it directly in the YouTube video editor which I learned to use the same day... And sadly, the result you heard was the lowest and higher level for the music and voice I could get with it. Would I have known, I would have used something like Movie Maker from Windows and then just posted the trailer on Youtube
Since I spent a lot of time and energy on this trailer, I don't know when I'll make a new one, but when I do your feedback (and any new one I'd get) will be very important.
So thank you again, Jujube. Thank you very much.
P.S. Regarding my accent, I'm french, but I try to improve it as best I can by mimicking what I hear on American tv series... :D

I enjoyed the trailer, though I think it is a bit long - I liked the music the first time I heard it, but after watching the clip a few times, the repetition started getting on my nerves. I also liked the drawings - did you make them yourself? I would like to see more than just the two. Your voice is good as it is - no need to americanize it - but it would indeed be good if we could hear it better. Lastly, "you can let a comment or two" should be "...leave a comment..." Good luck with your channel - your videos are fun to watch.
Patience, grasshopper.

Thanks a lot for your feedback, daal :)

Here's the link for two pages of a webcomic I worked on, like 8 years ago. It'll give you a broader idea of my drawing skills back then:
http://bdmedievale.free.fr/etude.php?num_page=27
http://bdmedievale.free.fr/etude.php?num_page=48

But truth be told, since I didn't draw much after that project, when I decided to make my Dontbtme avatar and the image where he plays Go, I spent waaaay too much time on it, which is why I left the surroundings unfinished (yeah, it wasn't a stylistic choice, just plain laziness :D )
Next time I'll work on the trailer, I could maybe add a hand at the beginning (as a way to express greeting), and change my avatar's expression here and there (or maybe not, because I kind of like that his face remains the same no matter what he's saying)

Regarding the length of the trailer, I agree with you. Something like 1:30 minutes would probably be better than 2 minutes for a trailer. I'll keep that in mind.
And for the accent, no worries, I'm just trying to get rid of mine ;-)
For the 'leave a comment' thanks a lot! I can't even imagine how many mistakes like 'let a comment' I must have done  And this one was in the description of each video I posted!!!

All right! So, I tried to redo my trailer (this time with the Movie Maker software that comes with Windows) according to Jujube and daal's remarks  :
_ I raised the volume from my talk and tried to lower the music's as much as possible... Curiously, the music is still pretty loud  , but at least we can hear me talk perfectly now :)
_ I made many cuts and now the total length is only 1:34 minutes which should be more suited for a trailer.
_ I revised the text (but if you see any remaining English/spelling mistakes, please warn me at once  )
The music is the same as before for reasons explained above, but I'm quite confident that the result is a lot better than the previous one, and I hope funny enough to attract people...
Anyway, here's the new trailer:
Once again, I would appreciate any feedback on it :)
Thanks, everyone!

I think the music is still a bit too loud, but overall it's a good trailer.

Thanks, Abyssinica. :)
Somehow, I couldn't get the music's volume lower without muting it, either on YouTube Video Editor or on Windows Movie Maker... :-?
Well, that'll have to do, I guess.

I did in fact raise my voice's volume to the maximum in the second and third extracts, that's why we can understand what I'm saying now, at least compared to the preceding (deleted) version. :)
But even if Movie Maker would have let me raise it even more (it didn't), the original music already on those extracts (under my voice) would then probably have become audible as well... and mingled distastefully with the music trailer (does it make sense?). :-?
So, regarding the audio part, I'm not sure I could have done better than my last version. :-|

This is very nicely produced - certainly way above my level of video production skill. For my money, the balance of voice and music is just fine for the purposes of a trailer, but I wouldn't want to hear any background music during actual games.

Judging by your self-portrait, you look a bit like Go Seigen. Now to work on playing like him, too!

Thanks Tami. :)
I like listening to music when I play, but couldn't find a way for it not being on my streams... That's why I set its volume to the minimum, so that it's quite low compared to my voice (a lot more than in the trailer, anyway :D ).
