Lee Sedol vs. Google DeepMind: Game 1

Post by Charlie »

In case you haven't realised, yet, the first match between Google and Lee Sedol starts at 04h00 GMT, tomorrow. You can see a live stream of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFr3K2DORc8

That page says the commentary will be done by Michael Redmond (9-dan pro) and Chris Garlock. (Haven't got a clue who Mr Garlock is.)

For those of us who're unemployed enough to get up in the wee hours of the morning to watch the stream, where would be a good place to hang out and discuss or kibitz? YouTube's comment section will surely be a poor option.

Also, who's going to win? My money's still on the human.

gogameguru will host a commented stream, whatever that means:

https://gogameguru.com/alphago-1/

"[Comments will be enabled shortly before the game starts.]"

I'm don't know if Andrew Jackson / Myungwan Kim will be doing a live relay / commentary on KGS.

P.S. Chris Garlock is an (the?) editor of the AGA e-Journal and appeared in the recent videos for the AGA pro exams amongst others.

I'm guessing it is something else for the majority of L19 users - (late)evening for the Americans and late morning / early afternoon for the Asians. And not that early morning for the Russians either.

(I'm European and it would be quite an early morning for me, but luckily I'm currently in Thailand)

Seems a little extreme to go there just to watch a go game. :)
Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

I believe that Andrew Jackson and Myungwan Kim won't be commenting on the first two games.

If you don't fancy hanging out here then you could try the British Go Association Facebook page, although most British players will probably be in bed for the first couple of hours.

I'm also in Thailand but prefer to move to other countries since 11AM is my work time. Any country that match begin at 4-5PM?

He's the AGA's VP of Communications, currently.

It seems they will (reddit thread about the AGA broadcast).

If I'm figuring this correctly, New Zealand will do.

Germany, for example (05:00 am)

Everybody can check the game begin for their timezone here: http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=March+9,+13:00+KST

If I understand correctly, DeepMind’s YouTube channel will begin streaming 30 minutes before the game begins … so maybe we will also get some extra information?

It's 9pm mountain time USA, I am hoping to stay up for the whole game. I was thinking I may replay some Lee Sedol games to get ready.

Random comments:

- Too bad they didn't show the set up, the audience, etc.
- Not digging Lee Sedol's short haircut
- Would be very interesting if they give Lee Sedol food so we can watch him eat in stream
- Wanna see more of AlphaGo's screen and its confidence level
