Favorite game of Shusaku

Post by gently-kiai »

Which game is your favorite game of Shusaku and why? (except the Ear Reddening Game)

One of my favourite games of Shusaku is his 18th castle game:

I like the precise sequence 24-38 which generates safe life.

The moves 50-80 are very nice too, they cut the black stones in two peaces and make a lot of pressure to the group on the right hand side. :batman:

The invasion 82-100 makes the game complete.

I'm still (slowly) working through Invincible, so I can't say which is my favorite. But I really enjoyed the most recent game I played through, his July 13, 1847 game with Honinbo Shuwa:

Both players showed their fighting spirit and it was quite close through the endgame.

By the way, can someone explain the move 62 by white in this game?

I think that was a ko threat plus taking away a half eye while losing a liberty. White did not have many ko threat to start with so it is reasonable i think.

Yes move 62 taking away one eye but it protects a cut at F3 too because white can take with a move at E5 later.

I think a really nice game ( http://gokifu.com/s/jbb-gokifu-18511115 ... 8d%29.html )
from Shuwa and Shusaku both is the game which was played in Hikaru no Go : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHRZ7MW9RiM.
From 1 to 7 they play the famous 'Shusaku opening'.
I like move 43. Black's formation on the right hand side looks ideal.
But Shuwa invades forcefully with 44-50 (I think black 45 is bigger than making territory on the right hand side, it is helpful if white forces black to escape with his attacked group.)
But after white 50 black is able to play 51 whereafter white can only live if he wins a Ko.
White plays 52 and 54 because even if white tenuki [play elsewere] after move 55 or later black can't kill the group directly: If black play T5 white play S5, it's still a bad Ko.
With move 56 white forces a new Ko up to move 62.
White takes the Ko created by himyself with 64 to make a powerful influence orientated game. (Otherwise if white play 64 on S5 black will cut with P8 and black will win one of the to Ko's for shure.
Note: it threatens a black cut at K5 after that.)
I love the black move 75 because of the ponnuki-shape (4 stones) and the weaknesses at N15 and E8.
At the end of the game it's very remarkable to see how Shuwa squeeze out points from his influential position.
