Re: 2016 Samsung Cup
Japan should honestly admit that they suck at go compared to Korea and China and create a huge reform in how they teach students and organize tournaments.
Re: 2016 Samsung Cup
Kim Jieseok and Lee Changho were eliminated in their first game by Kang Seungmin and Ryu Soohang respectively.

Re: 2016 Samsung Cup
In the world group Mateusz Surma 1p won his first game against some Asian-named (Vietnamese?) amateur 5d and now plays Victor Chow 7d of South Africa. Also Cornel Burzo, Manuel Velasco and Pavol Lisy progressed against lower ranked opponents.

Other results I noticed (Mr Kin's now posted full prelim table minus world group at http://igokisen.web.fc2.com/wr/sc.html) were Shibano Toramaru, a young 2d from Japan that Antti Tormanen has mentioned and who often plays training games online won through the first 2 rounds against Park Jinyoung 2d and An Joyeong 9d of Korea. And another upset of a big name to a small name, Park Yeonghun 9d lost to Hu Yuhan 3d from China (19% chance according to goratings.org, of course many other big names went through as expected so it's not unexpected that some big names fall).

Congrats Europe. A bummer, though, to see a linked Victor Chow (aka RoseDuke) game where he doesn't open with 5-5.

Maybe he doesn't play such extravagant moves in serious games? He played the same 4-4 3-3 combo against me in the Pandanet European Team Championships.

Re: 2016 Samsung Cup
Ali beat Cornel and Pavol beat Mateusz (by 3.5). So we have another Ali vs Pavol matchup. Pavol leads Ali 7-4 in head-to-head, but Pavol got stronger earlier than Ali and Ali seems to be doing well recently (e.g. won the 2016 Euro Grand Slam tournament), so I think I might bet on Ali. Either way good news for our new European pros.

Re: 2016 Samsung Cup
Dissapointed to see Shibano Toramaru 2d knocked out by Kang Seungmin in the last round, but good to see some young Japanese players venturing out into international tournaments. Ida Atsushi 8d scraped through in the penultimate round with a half point win against Korean amateur Kim Huisoo after a load of stones died / were sacrificed in a huge spreading corner fight in exchange for a huge moyo, in which Kim made a massive Ko but Ida had too many threats from the dead stones. Ida's final game was interesting in that he wilfully played himself into what is usually considered a joseki mistake (afaik) and died but got some outside in exchange, see diagram and link below. And near the end of my transcription I'm not sure why Kim bothered to play the b11 atari if he didn't fight the ko there, maybe it's a probe in that if he directly a3 then black wouldn't b12 (because then white b11 for a11 is an unconditionally bad exchange) but tenuki (and connect the ko if atarid later?) and white wanted to get sente, but then why not just take sente immediately? Maybe the k6 aji relevant, or was it just a bluff which Ida (who seems to have a lot of fighting spirit) called so he had to concede?

And congratulations to Ali Jabarin, here's a picture Blackie (Kim Seungjun 9p) posted of them reviewing:

It's been at least five years, but probably more like ten, since he used that opening. He's been doing 4-4,3-3 for ages now. A shame, I agree.
