The question is somewhat abstract. The first diagram is more like stealing the stone's base, maybe trying to kill. The second is ensuring the corner is maintained while keeping pressure on the opponent.
In both cases, black should be flexible to make a good result...
Hard to say there are universal answers here, other than the obvious response: depends on the rest of the board.

The hane under is often used when white already has some strength on the outside so the normal block would feel inefficient and give Black that easy 3rd line atari. That's why you sometimes see this attach as an early probe before Black gives white some outside strength. Sometimes it develops into a big life and death fight.

This appeared in a game that I played with a 4 dan recently. I'll paste the position below, along with the move sequence I played. I don't feel satisfied with the result that I got.
Ko is the best solution.

I think you should capture the cut, that's the normal pro move. White cannot locally live in the corner, though maybe there's some aji like a. If white then ataris on top you do have a decision about whether to capture or connect.
P.S. I only just properly looked at the top half of the board. That knight's move from your wall was probably a bad move, particularly given you had the extra 2 space extension on top (or if you added that afterwards it's inefficient). When white answers solidly with the nobi you lose many other options, notably the checking extension from the third line on the right (and also push being sente in fighting if white activates the pincer stone e.g. b/c). Thinking that knight's move for nobi is a good exchange when it's not seems to be a very common low dan mistake. I'm pulling numbers out of my rear end, but that knight's move is maybe only good 20% of the time versus the checking extension 80% (I'm ignoring other options like shoulder hit or outside attach for now). I suggest you try to reduce how much you play it and make the checking extension your new normal follow-up in that position. You'll certainly learn things and hopefully play better too.
