2017; Retirement of Lee Sedol?

Post by hokusai »

Lee Sedol closed the year by winning KBS Cup against Na Hyun. After the match, as far as I can understand through a google translation, he declared that next year would be the last year for his career if his results are similar to this year. He also seems to admit AlphaGo is stronger than him or Ke Jie but believes that if he had better knowledge on the strength of Alphago prior to series he would have gotten at least one more win. I read from Japanese site and he said in the next year he require to win at least one international cup to continue his go career, and he want a lot of support from his fan (what???)

But his standard is unrealistically high, even so called 'unsuccessful year' he's still number two of top Korean pro, and in top 10 world pro. He also gained celebrity status from AlphaGo match.

His standard is definitely high, but it's not unrealistically high. It may be unrealistically high for all but a few people in the world, but it's definitely a realistic goal for Lee Sedol.

Lee Sedol always has high pride and target, but I appreciate him being frank and reasonable in his speech.

From the article I read on Wbaduk, he seems to judge that the current Alpha Go could give human player 1-2 handicap stones (and he doubts that Ke Jie can win a single game against AG).
