Resigning when ahead?

Post by Ian Butler »

Just played another game. I think I messed up on the left side pretty bad. Then I decided to go for something else and tried to develop a big middle, which was sort of working. Black had something in my sphere of influence I felt pretty okay I could kill, it would have a tough time making eyes.
I, on the other hand, had a real way into his terrotiry, with a good cutting point. I saved it for a bit until I thought it was the right timing (is this a mistake. If he had seen it during that time, I would've had 2 moves in a row so that's good, right? Or immediately take advantage?)

Anyway, I took the cutting point and black resigned. However, Leela has black still at the advantage (though let's say it's about 50-50 at the moment of resignation. I was behind earlier though)

Which brings me to my question: where did I fall behind? Was it the left side I messed up? I think it was 70. What a slow move. I realized it while I played it, too. But I was in byo-yomi fairly soon so not a lot of time to think, unfortunately.

Some comments. Losing both the bottom and left sides was grim.

Edit: Replaced variations.

Thank you, Bill.

About the 3-3. Leela has them pretty equal. (Leela 11 though)
Leela also wants to hane first, yes.

Losing that side was a bit of a blunder on my part, yes. Still, I liked that I changed directions after that and got back in the game :)
