Life and Death Problems

Post by CaiGengYang »

Hello,

I've been trying some life and death problems on tom.com --- here's the link --- http://weiqi.tom.com/hubo/sihuoying_3.htm.

But I can't seem to be able to solve the 5 dan questions (last column). I think I can solve the middle one, but don't even know where to start for the 1st and last 5 dan question. If anyone can help, appreciate it. Thanks

If shorthands do not reveal and confirm a solution, apply the method of regular tactical reading (at every decision, at least one confirming move or all moves reject; iterate backwards) until you find and confirm a solution. In particular, for the first move analyse next candidates until you find and verify a confirming move or else you verify all moves as rejecting. If solutions were suboptimal (inferior count, ko, seki etc.), you would need to also test for better solutions. You do not learn solving of difficult problems by asking for answers. Solve by yourself. In difficult problems, this can mean to analyse hundreds of variations during the decision-making of regular tactical reading. It does allow some simplifications if applicable, such as reversion.

I almost forgot that set of L&D problems, 2200+ of them, all dan-level, all with solutions and brief comments (in Chinese). Great studying material for anyone serious about improvement.

It would be crazy to attempt to manually recreate the diagrams. A script to save the data would be quite easy (of course for personal use, rather than reuse the whole thing elsewhere).

I wasn't suggesting all of them, just the 1 he wants help on to be clear which one it is and facilitate discussion (e.g. coordinates, posting variations).

Its the diagram on the top right and bottom right-hand corner. I don't know how to transfer the diagram onto this website.

Uberdude posted two links just to show you how to do diagram here.

About the top-right corner problem, I would start from the second line, gifting white a stone to capture, then playing first line to create a bending 3 eye-space which is sente - then there appears to be a ko fight.

Yes, I managed to find that variation too. However, it results in a ko … I thought the question is looking for a clean survive without ko

The last question, bottom right hand corner --- I also could only get a ko fight solution, not sure if its correct
