Training plan

Post by Darknessmoves »

I am new here but only in terms of registering, I technically found this forums like 2 weeks ago, I am a beginner at baduk, 16/17kyu rank. this isn't much informations but I am bad at talking :/

Anyways here is my study plan.

5 Self-play games to do sequences of moves and apply new concepts and practice,
20 tsumego on graded go problems volume 2.
3 games against leela zero.
Replaying/memorizing alphago kifu. 3 replays of alphago, Memorize 1 alphago game every 3 days.
Play 2 games against another human.

This is great! Only a thing I’d recommend is adding a regular dose of playing others, either online or in person, and posting your games to get comments.

I agree with BlindGroup that you should add playing games with an eye towards being reviewed by others to your regimen.

I would further add that you should consider playing your own games against other human players instead of trying to memorize any AlphaGo games or playing against LeelaZero. At your level, I think those activities are way over your head. I'm a low dan and those activities are way over my head.

That said, if you really want to do it (the memorizing AlpaGo games part) go for it. The worry--and I think this worry is actually a verifiable fact--is that you will have no idea what the moves mean. But at least they'll train your intuition in certain respects in terms of thinking about what part of the board is bigger, when to tenuki, when to attach, etc. Maybe.

Good luck!

Opening theory made easy is a great choice of book.

I would suggest Graded Go Problems for Beginners vols 2 & 3 and James Davies' Tesuji

I would steer well clear of memorising games at your level. Not an efficient use of your time.

Hi Darknessmoves,

For newly created accounts, there's a little bit of human interactions in the beginning, to guard against spambots, which occasionally hit this site.

Do you think moves 75, 99, 105 were necessary?

Yea, when I look back on it I shouldn't have done those moves but on 105 There wasn't any other moves I could see that were necessary or good. or even ok.

For 105 you can reduce White's territory on the top, for instance with M14. Or play P14, which threatens P16.

5 self play games done.
20 tsumego on graded go problems for beginners volume 2 done.
3 games against leela zero done.
3 replays of alphago kifu done didn't memorize as I am doing that in 2 days.
2 games against a human done.

I played very poorly on my second game against a human :/. I resigned early as I knew I messed up badly.

Move 9 was already a mistake (check josekipedia.com or another reference on josekis), but maybe not a big one compared to the rest.

:b12: feels overconcentrated to me, I would have extended along the edge (C11 or D11).

Did you feel at move 20 that your top left group was weak (= could come under attack)?

:b21: is not good because 1) it is overextended, it leaves a weakness at M3. 2) You already finished the joseki on the lower right, your lower right group is already strong, no need to add more stones, so you should play elsewhere.

Did you see that at move 28, White threatens to build a very large territory on the lower left?

:b33: is an elephant jump, it is often a bad move because of the weakness at Q10. It is often better to play a one-space jump or a knight's move.

After move 52 the game is almost lost for Black. Even if you don't die, white will consolidate his lower left territory while attacking your weak stones.
