3H game

Post by Ian Butler »

I played this game earlier today. Time settings were rather fast, 5 minutes and 5x30 Byo-Yomi.
With 3H I set out to try and attack. Rather I got seduced into building and maybe that clouded my judgement a bit. I felt I had a good moyo and it might win me the game. So I pushed the opponent the wrong way and I was the one ending up with the wrong group.

However, there were some attempts to attack, and I'm especially looking for feedback on those attempts. How and when to attack are my focus points at the moment.

I'm also happy I was able to win this game because of my L&D skills. Not that they are super fantastic, but they were good enough today, and it made two of my weak groups live, and my opponent's final attempt fail. So I can be proud of them, for now ;)

There is already some self-reviewing, my interpretation and that of Leela.

Main foci:

Keep your opponent's stones separated. Divide and conquer.

Do not needlessly strengthen your opponent's stones.

Cut sector lines.

Thank you both for your input.
I feel like I made some progress with this game and if I can keep it up, I might finally start learning to attack, even if only in a basic way :)

@Joaz
Woah, that first diagram, great move!
As for the third diagram, I can't honestly say I thought about it during the game, but during my self-review, I had noticed it and figured it might've been better than what I actually played.

@Bill
Thanks for the comments and variations!
Looks like I made some good choices, but there is still much left to learn!
Divide and conquer continues to pop up... Just went for a walk to think things through: thoughts on that incoming in my study journal.

That move - or actually the theory behind it - is the one that will make the biggest improvement in your game.

Let me commend Joaz's second diagram. Not that it is better than taking the 3-3 and then securing the corner with a descent, but by breaking the sector line it attacks both White groups. A two space jump would also have done so. Such play would have been a good way to practice attacking. :)
