playing a very basic game

Post by Knotwilg »

In another thread, I posted that an 18 kyu can probably win games easily if

1. they focus on connection/moving out their own groups and separate/surrounding the opponent
2. they are aware of liberties and try keeping more liberties than the opponent in local fights
3. they consider at least 1 alternative and think 3 moves deep

Although I'm probably forging the point, here's a game where Black plays according to these rules and White plays more or less like myself. Black makes a few suboptimal choices and falls a little behind but there is no disastrous disadvantage.

The trick is just to figure out which basic principle to obey each move and where :-)

I think it is harder than it looks to play simple like black does in this example.

In particular, the "connecting at a distance" part may be hard, I mean figuring out when it's worth investing a move to do so. Also, it is very easy to create complicated fights where reading ahead just 3 moves won't give a reasonable way out.

It would be nice if actual double-kyu players try this and let us know how it works!

Wonderful advices. Could even apply for Dan players! Not saying these would be enough per se.
Just saying that they seems hard objectives for 18k. But easy to understand for sure.

Calculating 3 moves ahead is pretty hard. Keeping the most liberties is at the same level as other fundamentals, like playing away from strength, it's like a way to think go.
The first, cut/connect is surely the easiest to understand and apply.

This is the kind of Go I like to see! It's a tough ideal to aspire to in the heat of battle, but a simple style also has more potential to grow with you, I feel.
