I was afraid to play if I didn't study a lot in between, trying to make certain I would win.

Sounds like that might be more of a "win" obsession, than a rank obsession.

If you find yourself afraid to play, because you don't want to drop a rank, just play some free games.

I am very unstable. However, according to KGS ranks, I seemed to get stuck at the following levels:

21k
15k
12k --> Later KGS rank shift bumped me up to 8k
5k
2k
1d
Now, 2k-ish again?

On Tygem I entered my initial rank as 5k when I was probably about 2k (for the first time ). I didn't really get stuck anywhere, and I'm 2d there, now. However, if KGS is accurate that my rank has dropped, maybe I will start slipping on Tygem, too.

I guess I am probably not stable because I need to play more. I also play too fast, sometimes.

I guess I just have to keep trying.
