A loss by 9.5 points.

Post by tekesta »

I would like for you to kindly review this game. It quickly turned into a moyo reduction battle and I did my best to reduce as much as possible, but I fell behind and lost by 9.5 points. Perhaps it was inevitable that I was going to be faced with a ginormous moyo? Or was I just too timid in dealing with it? Much obliged in advance for your comments!

1) Your main problem seems that you play slack moves because you are afraid to die.

:w64: is not needed, you are already pretty safe, and it's gote. Even if you are not confident in your reading, playing at P2 would have been better as it threatens to reduce the corner.

Move 108: are you afraid of losing H5? There are bigger moves at this stage, like L17. Even P2 is bigger.

Move 124: why not extend at N13?

2) Corners are big. :w36: doesn't achieve much. Better protect the lower left corner at C3 or make a corner enclosure at C14.

3) :w90: is a 1pt gote move (Black didn't need to protect at H9).
Moves 136 and 144 are small and gote.

4) You missed the tsumego at move 170. You get a ko with B18.

5) You spent 5.6 seconds per move on average. You could take more time to read/look at the whole board/try alternative moves.

:w30: should be at q14, a the extension is only a good alternative if you can extend once more after the black hane

:w32: should be at f10

At this point in the game you were leading with about 5 points and there is no black moyo anymore (ok, only about equal, it is a 0.5 komi game)

How to reduce the black moyo is the wrong question, you are already able to do so quite effectivly.

(if you want more help i recommend you make sure your sgf is downloadable)
