Tournamemt postponements

Post by John Fairbairn »

I haven't bothered to check how the corona virus is affecting the ordinary Chinese tournament scene, but it seems that the eagerly awaited Game 2 of the 1st Fox Pro Tournament (Iyama 1-0 up against Tong Mengcheng) due on 12 February may have been postponed. Likewise the Chunlan Cup games due on 24 Feb in Taizhou have been scuppered.

No new dates have been scheduled, though presumably internet games remain an option. That was used for 6th Korea-China King of the New Stars Match in 2003 during the SARS outbreak. But that was a team event. Perhaps there is a greater reluctance to use the internet for big-money individual games.

Seriously? Tokyo is two and a half thousand kilometres from Wuhan. Is it really that dangerous to be in town? How are the other ten million people there coping?

It's difficult to extrapolate, but the number of cases in Japan has multiplied by 3-4x so far this month (though it's only 74 so far). I don't know how bad it'll be, maybe not even worse than flu season. However, there are still a lot of new cases in China, despite quarantines, closing stores and workplaces. It's already had almost 10x the cases SARS had, with 2.5x as many deaths. SARS resulted in cancelling the WAGC.

I don't know if there's an airtight argument for cancellation, but it doesn't seem like a surprising decision.

Yes, but 74 out of 125,000,000 is still better than your odds of being in a car accident on the way to the airport.

You’re right that if you assume there will be about 74 cases in May, it would be very unreasonable to cancel the tournament.

One nice thing about Japan is that people wear masks when they have cold or flu symptoms. From what I have read, masks are not really effective in protecting yourself from others, but they are good in protecting others from you. :)
