Does anyone know if there a way to set up this style of timing on a Chronos clock? Thanks!

Thanks - I've looked at that, and at the complete manual pdf:

I haven't been able to find a mode that would replicate this type of timing. It may be that it's just not possible, but maybe someone knows how you'd do it.

I was intrigued by the question so followed several links and searches only to discover how many weirdly complex timing systems exist for go. I had no idea so thanks for the education! The Chronos manual itself was a deep dive into the literally hundreds of variations for many games that require precise timekeeping for tournaments. Again, thanks.

I suppose you've already got the Chronos clock. Have you contacted the maker? There may be an address or phone number in your manual but I can't find the manufacturer's official site. I found this reference to the Chronos repair facility on an old chess forum but there is no direct customer service contact liker a phone number or email address:
>> I sent my dead chronos clock directly to the P.O. Box listed in the back of the Chronos User's Guide - DCI P.O. Box 390741 Mountain View, CA 94039. <<<

Might be easier to just buy a clock that already knows the particular set of Japanese rules you think you need?

Sorry, I misunderstood your question. AFAIK, you cannot set the extra period to one minute while the byo yomi is 30 seconds. But then, you should not want to! :)

Replicating NHK timing is undesirable due to the extreme inefficiency of the system. We should realize that for the same amount of time, 20 periods of 30 seconds each would be much more beneficial to the players. Not to mention a single block of 10 minutes where you only lose what you use. NHK timing just seems to be part of the show.

Like bogiesan, it was more that it was intriguing to me whether or not the clock could do it, rather than thinking this was some sort of an ideal timing system. Also thinking in the back of my head that if that timing system ever gained much traction, it would be a shame that the Chronos didn't support it. It's got about 85,000 different options, after all.
