If only they had added Go to Yakuza:
( most basic moves: 2:00 ~ 3:00. Well, Hikaru no Go already happened... :) :study: )

If only Harry Potter had included “wizard’s go” instead of chess.

Well, it was to be revealed after the fall of the Magic Ministry that the Resistance had turned to an egalitarian chess played in the intersections on odd-numbered boards... but Mrs. Rowling ran out of ink.

Take care.

Naotora, the Lady Warlord, [Onna Joushu Naotora], is the 56th Taiga Drama of the NHK [*], 2017. I haven't been able to watch it properly, yet, but the first 30+ videos seem to be available without messing with the NHK and subtitle files. It's a story set during the Sengoku period, just before the final rise of the Tokugawa.

So far, I've seen three goban, two of them recurring. A 3 sun or so dark standup goban, a bow-legged one (similar to this, but it doesn't seem to come apart) and one carved in the floor, next to the... veranda? I think I recall something glimpsed in a military camp, but I'm not sure. I assume to dark stained one is supposed to be aged. If it was old in the XVIth century...

It's quirky, because the clan is an important historical Japanese clan, and their clothes make me feel they'r enot hurting for money, and yet... the stones are thin and chipped. Also, the thinner goban is the daimyo's. Maybe there's some importance I'll get when I'm able to watch it through.

Take care.

I watched Knives Out last night. Lots of big names and lots of go mentions - even 9x9. And not an oriental in sight.

When I bought the DVD, the supermarket cashier took off her mask just to tell me how good the film was. (Not a classic, I thought, but entertaining. I was well satisfied.)

Both those paragraphs indicate go really is mainstream here now, no?

It's the Traviatta in Pretty Woman, the way of showing sophistication, and a hint of a dangerous mind and some exoticism. The difference is that when they show the Traviatta they use recordings by professionals and not the cast trying to reach a note they didn't ever consider possible. Ie, not the equivalent of playing gomoku or grabbing the stones like peanuts. For what's worth, something similar happens with the hurdy gurdy

Take care.

The sentiments and discussions are quite reminiscent of those around the introductions of Deep Blue and AlphaGo:
