How to Count European Go Champions?

Post by RobertJasiek »

Is the Online European Go Champion 2020, Ilya Shikshin, supposed to count towards his number of European Go Champion titles?

Nobody forces you to count it if you don't want.

I do want to pay respect to top achievers among title holders. It is interesting for how long Jürgen Mattern stays on top of the eternal list or when possibly Ilya sets a new record.

Previously, it has been easy to follow titles on the EGF page of all European Go Congresses, but this year there is no entry for the European Champion (yet) because this year it has not been determined at a European Go Congress.

A statement by the EGF could clarify the issue.

I asked some of the other European pros commentating on twitch this question and was told yes, though I don't know if they are 100% authoritative.

It seems reasonably well run to count IMO, an obvious misclick in semi final was undone instead of standing and spoiling the game (ahem!), it wasn't won by some unknown 4k obviously using a bot. The time limits were a little shorter than I think a European championship game deserves, but best of 3 was better than the real life version best of 1 so cancels out.

Not sure if this counts as statement: The european champions are listed in the hall of fame, besides all other title holders.

Ah ok. This likely counts as official. Such information on the EGF webpage used to be maintained by a member of the executive (Toni Atkins, former president), although I do not know who does it nowadays.

For everybody else's information, IIRC, you are Lorenz Trippel, member of the EGF executive:)

Tony Atkins. He's male the last time we looked. Toni would normally be female in the UK.
