You instinctively/automatically connect while there is no cut or there's a much more efficient way to defend against any possible cut in the future.

My recommendation for your next game is: when you are about to make a connecting move (like the ones above) pause to read the cut. If the cut doesn't work, don't connect. If it works, connect. If you can't read it out, decide if you want to take the risk.
