QUESTION 'Surrounded on one side'

Post by rodcurtis »

In this situation, playing in the middle 13x13. Black has surrounded the white on the right side of the board.

IF its whites turn to go he can capture the bottom right black. (red spot)

IF its blacks turn they can go in the same (red) spot and stop that happening.

IF black stops that happening and plays in the (red) spot play. Does black then surround the whites and there is no point in anyone going in the 7 'eyes' that are remaining on the right side.

And then how many points does black get at the end for surrounding the whites?

OR is there a way for white to break out?

Would there be any point for any colours black or white to put counters in the remaining 7 'eyes'

I hope you understand, me and my girlfriend are new and she said that she captures all my whites as she was black and has me surrounded. I said no because I have 7 'eyes'.

However, I broke out by putting a white in the 'red' spot and the game went on from there, and she said she doesn't understand because she had me surrounded.

Thank you if you reply to this.

Play until the boundaries are settled (and any kos there dissolved). Then the players pass. Then the scoring depends on the rules:

Rules type I: Territory + opposing dead stones + prisoners.

Rules type II: Territory + your own stones on the board.

Groups have to be surrounded on both the inside and the outside to be captured.

I see you are playing in just the middle of the board. The white group on the right side is surrounded but not captured. That white group is "alive" and will be worth points. The eyes do not need to be filled in. I personally think it's easiest for beginners to just fill in the points at the end of the game and count the number of stones for scoring.

By the way, there is a Go teacher on YouTube named James Story (World Go Channel). I don't know him personally but I've seen his video lectures for beginners and I think they are great, maybe the best beginner lectures out there. He covers a wide range of topics and also has an ordered series.

Just keep playing. The scoring will make more sense after a more games. Play 9x9 if you can, the games are much quicker.
