Don making sure GD posts preserved; "fully supports" L19!

For those of you who don't still lurk over at GoDiscussions, Javaness posted that Don "seems to be transferring the history over to LifeIn19x19", and Don himself just posted this:

I was hoping to wait until an import had been successfully attempted, but I can confirm that I have sent a complete copy of the GD post records over to Jordus.

Let me assure you that I'm not angry at the go community. My professional life has changed quite a bit since I started this site and that has inversely affected my ability to maintain GD.

There have been a couple failed attempts to pass on the reigns, but this is the first one I have confidence can succeed and I fully support it.

I'll go ahead and create an official announcement thread now.

My apologies for breaking the news early, but I must say this is absolutely amazing. Hats off to Don, and many thanks for his willingness to keep the community together, preserve the rich history of the GoDiscussions site, and just be an all-around good guy while he's at it. This is great news.

We were also waiting to announce this until we were ready to import the database.

We will keep you updated on the status of the import as we go.

Currently we are in the planning phase.

I am very happy to hear that Don supports saving the history created in GD. Don did the community a great service creating GD and getting it established. This hand off of the records is yet another great service to the community. Thank you Don.

I'm curious. If Don is so willing to hand over all the threads from GD I have to assume he is closing GD down. What about transferring the domain name? That would seem to be the logical final step becuase GD has name recognition. And must as I appreciate all the effort which has been put into this new site, I think the name is not optimal.

One other thought. If all the posts are being transfered from GD what is being done about username resolution?

EDIT: When I posted this I saw a new entry on the sidebar: GD posts. Except that it says I don't have any. Seeing as how Sol.ch has created a new name for himself here will I get credit for all his posts if I usurp the name on this site?

I am happy to announce some news tonight that will be welcomed by the GoDiscussions community. In an effort to avoid splitting the members or having GD live on as a mere archive (or worse, lose 4 years of posts if this site fails completely), I have sent Jordus the complete archive of posts for him to import into LifeIn19x19.

I am confident that the team over there will be able to handle that in a graceful manner, and once complete, I will close this site and direct people to that domain.

My personal and professional obligations have changed quite a bit in the years since I created the site, and I haven't been able to maintain it in the way that it deserves. I would have done this sooner if possible, but there simply weren't any alternatives that I felt were truly sustainable.

Additionally, I would like to say that I am willing to transfer the GoDiscussions.com domain name to Jordus and team if the community desires that. I will leave that up to the people here and Lifein19x19 to decide.

It has been a genuine pleasure to watch this community grow and evolve. I am also relieved, as I know everyone else is, to see this effort transition into its next era. I look forward to seeing it thrive again.

Now that is style. Don deserves a lot of credit for what he is doing. I was beginning to doubt him after the failure or the latest attempt to revive GD, but that has all changed now.

That's good news, glad to see the community being so supportive. I didn't use GoDiscussions too much, but I appreciate all the effort that must have gone into it.

I like this idea, I've seen it done before on other boards. Popular threads were moved to the current forums and older ones were archived (my only concern would be the organization of the archive, but I'm sure that isn't a hard problem to solve).
