My only remaining diagram complaint is that circles on Black stones are very hard to make out. Just making the circles a bit thicker ought to do the trick.

  • I dearly miss being able to click “thank you😄
Just noticed that in another thread there’s a 👍 button that I could click, apparently it’s not everywhere?

I wonder how all our “old timers” would learn about the resurrection of this forum if they don’t receive emails telling them about it … I’m not sure they all check SL’s L19 status page regularly or the OGS forum thread about L19’s crash and resurrection or the similar thread on r/baduk … I for one didn’t get such a mail yet.

If we could be sure they had email notifications enabled for thread updates it could help to add some <ping> post to all threads here but 1. that’s not sure and 2. sending out one Admin email would be much “cleaner”, plus ofc there also were lurkers who never engaged in any thread.

Pls forgive me for replying once again instead of editing my former post but this is about something VERY different:

Now that L19 has been successfully updated to the latest phpBB, I believe it would be a good thing to migrate L19 to a more modern forum software, for example to NodeBB or (my personal preference) to Discourse (which latter is what OGS uses for its forum) … editing is a lot easier there, as is embedding images, links etc., many here will have encountered that forum software and probably appreciate its features like I do.

There‘s even a thread in the Discourse Help Forum about how to convert a phpBB forum to Discourse.

About the custom scripts/add-ons that have been created for L19 … if some LLM AI could help Adrian get L19 back online then maybe such an AI could just as well aid in adapting those scripts/add-ons for Discourse?

I for one have really been spoiled by years of using Discourse … every time I come to some other forum it feels like I’m back in the 1990s 🤷‍♂️

I for one appreciate this about L19. It's my last remaining phpBB haunt, after I made my home on those back in 2004 :)

But just to state again that I strongly agree that there should be an admin email to every registered user, so we can retrieve the last and maybe most important component of L19: the community. :)

THANK YOU!

re: updating to "modern" forum software.

Please no.

Discourse and other JS heavy solutions work terribly on older hardware/browsers and generally don't handle accessibility as well as "old-school" web apps.

It is great that it is back and it sounds like it was lot of work. Thanks!

The theme and the layout is much improved but I had to increase the font size for myself (using a browser plugin that overrides the CSS), while I was at it I changed to a font I find more readable.

Something like this for me now:

Code: Select all

@import url('https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=Noto+Sans:ital,wght@0,100..900;1,100..900&display=swap');
.postbody .content {
  font-size: 2.5ex;
  font-family: 'Noto Sans';
}
The default font seems to be smaller than on any other website I use. I think it was even smaller before. Possibly it would be a good idea to increase the size and/or offer some configurable font sizes.

As for the Go diagrams. I think they are better than the old diagrams but the 19x19 lines look little bit too thin or blurry. They are OK when I download the images and view offline but for some reason everything gets rescaled in the browser. Maybe the lines would be clearer if they were closer to being black and/or little bit thicker?

Yes, my vote is to keep on phpBB forum style, please. I find the newer styles of forums/chat servers unreadable.

Yay! I'm very happy to see this forum back :-)

Re a couple of previous comments:
- Another vote for keeping phpBB rather than moving to Discourse. I don't like the "infinite scrolling" model of Discourse threads. When the discussion gets long (and some discussions on this site have been very long), it's easier to navigate when things are split into discrete pages, and useful to be able to bookmark a single page. Also, modern layouts in general have more whitespace and lower information density, which is good if you're just being sociable and not exchanging actual information, but is a step in the wrong direction for technical go discussions as far as I'm concerned. If we do change software for any reason, I'd put a very high priority on keeping SGF embeddings and diagrams: these are the reasons why I prefer to talk about go here rather than OGS or Reddit.
- Another vote for a slightly larger default font size (or a font size preference available in the user control panel).
- Speaking of SGF embedding, it looks like the inline SGF bug documented at viewtopic.php?f=14&t=18810 hasn't been fixed yet, but someone has suggested a patch that might do it?

Oh, and another bug: diagrams at https://www.lifein19x19.com/viewtopic.p ... 4&start=15 appear to be broken. I'm seeing boxes with the text "Go Diagram" where I'd expect to see the actual diagram. The "click here to show diagram code" links work: the diagram code is still there, just the images are missing.

Edit: later in the same thread, at https://www.lifein19x19.com/viewtopic.p ... 4&start=30, there's a post near the bottom by Cassandra where the diagrams are fine, but diagrams earlier on that page are missing. At a glance, I think the "bad" diagrams are positions in the middle of the board, where there are no board edges as part of the diagram?
