Why do KGS admins let the EGR be such a den of stupidity?
Why do they never shut down the stupid, puerile chats that go on there, and try and get people to go to the ECR? Sometimes the admins clamp down on lesser things, but as I look for games in the EGR, the IQ level of the people chatting makes me embarrassed to be there.

I don't think ECR will work unless it's automatically joined by new english clients just like the EGR.
Additionally KGS lacks fine grained moderation features. It seems like the only moderation feature is a kick/ban from the server. To enforce this policy channel level moderation features would be useful. Such as muting a player in the EGR.

What do you want? More censorship? The ECR is a nice idea, but it doesn't work. Telling a bunch of flies to please not eat the (explicative deleted) is usually a fruitless endeavor. The EGR a public place, and indeed not everybody would concur with your opinion as to what is puerile and what is not, and furthermore, some of the childish chat that vexes you is indeed the chatter of children - a noise which, as the German saying goes, is the music of the future. If this makes you cringe, perhaps you would support my proposal to clone the game offers from EGR into a Grumpy Old Man room where we could yell: "Get the (explicative deleted) off of my lawn!" (where did he learn those words?) and no one would be allowed to censor us.
Patience, grasshopper.

The thing is, think about people who are new to the game and KGS. If they come to that room, they're often greeted with derision, or at best they see a very confused group of people conversing stupidly. I don't know if it's like that in the other language rooms - the only other one I frequent is the French room, and not often - but I think it could be off-putting to new players.
But, hey, if no one cares, that's life.

Well, admin options are rather limited (warning and kicking people) and every push for more heavy-handed administration will have serious backdrops. (People kicked too early, complaints, some people leaving, bad feelings etc. pp.) I do like the proposal presented here (http://senseis.xmp.net/?topic=2235), however. It would achieve the same (without the users having to keep up a long ignore list themselves or heavy-handed admin activity).

Re: Why do KGS admins let the EGR be such a den of stupidity
While I agree that KGS comments in general are cringeworthy, I'm curious to know why they are a problem, kirk.
I'm starting from the assumption that you see them, that they catch your eye, and you can't help but read them. So you just need to obliterate them.
But there is a bar in the middle of my screen (Windows, not Mac, admittedly) which you can pull down to cover up the dross.
There may be a beep-beep sound element, which I can't hear anyway so I don't know, but that can surely be turned off as well?

I do care, but I do not see a practicable solution. The intellectual level of a bunch of random anonymous people on the internet just is not that great.

If this is their first experience with teh interwebs, maybe this is new to them?
I am sort of surprised to learn that there isn't a "mute" option, though. But that's a different point.

Yes, I can hide it, and I don't generally pay attention to it, unless I have a question regarding a game, situation, etc. But I was realizing how puerile all these comments are, and how they must seem to new users. There are often new users who come to the EGR, and they must feel, well, unwanted.
As for kibitzes, that's annoying too. There's no way to hide the chat section of the window when you're watching a game, and the problem is that some of the kibitzes are interesting: I can learn by following the discussions (and asking questions) about some of the games. But it's such a hassle to censor people: you have to find them in the list, or call up their info to do it. Some sort of a button would be much easier, but I'm guessing that Java is limited in such things as dealing with texts in lists. If it were possible to right-click on a comment and choose to censor its author, that would be much more efficient.
But the kibitzes, while annoying, are a different issue. Here I'm mostly thinking about how newcomers must feel entering this odd world.

Re: Why do KGS admins let the EGR be such a den of stupidity
1.) I think that the chatting that happens in the EGR is something that distinguishes KGS from other servers. Sometimes it is weird or annoying, but it can also be something that draws people in to KGS and makes them interested in the server.
2.) If you haven't noticed already, I am typically against more banning and censorship.
3.) The active and open games tabs work like a charm. If you're not interested in the chat in the EGR, you can setup and join games from these tabs.
4.) You were a new user once, and you are still using KGS, aren't you? While the atmosphere must have changed a bit with KGS, I'd be surprised if it's changed completely in 10 years. I'm sure that 10 years ago, there was still a bunch of "chatter" that people were not interested in - it's just that, at that time, people didn't have the "No Chats" option.

I've been on KGS since it started, and, yes, it was very, very different in the early days.
