Filtering

Post by John Fairbairn »

Is there anyway to filter on this site? Specifically, I want to exclude all Malkovitch files. There were 20 out of 34 new posts for me this morning.

I've been thinking that this would be a good idea too.

It has been mentioned before, but I think the best way to handle this is to allow whole forums to be ignored in a user's preferences.

I'm not sure how it would be implemented, but I'll add it to the todo list since it seems like a popular idea.

Don't you think there are too much Malkovich games at the same time ?

It became impossible to follow them all, and sometimes I feel like the forum has become a game server... I wonder if it wouldn't be a good idea to restrict them at, say, 3 simultaneously (one by "level of strength").

There is no need for you to follow them ALL, and there is no need for restriction. When you are not interested in a certain thread, you ignore it. Keep it the same with Malkovich games. Just concentrate on those where the players are a few stones stronger than you. Even though I don't follow these games right now, I like the idea, and later when I have more time and interest, I still can dig into these matches for studying.

yeah, but if you use the view unread post link, instead of by individual sub-forums, then those posts drown out all the others.

I can see where it would be nice to optionally filter out certain sub-forums.

I actually love reading the Malkovich games, and seeing people's thoughts. I find it very good self-study. However, I would also be very happy with separating the "unread posts" list in the way OGS does (but into Malkovich and non-Malkovich lists)

I prefer watching games where I know good comments (from good players) will arise. The more the games, the less interesting comments.

I remember with great pleasure looking at Joaz vs. Sol, I'm afraid we won't see such an interesting thread, fulfilling its teaching goals, with lots of intervention from all levels players, again.

We'll see.

I'd also like to see a way to filter the Malkovich posts from "view unread posts" and "view new posts". They really do overwhelm the lists, and since there is no quick short-cut to marking an entire forum as read without leaving those views of threads and clicking a couple of different times, I end up spending a lot of time either "reading around" the games threads or doing the 4 clicks necessary to mark them as read and get back to where I started.

This is partly two way of course. I accept that part of the lack of intervention is because there are so many games going on, and limiting it may well help with this, but I've noticed there is very little questions to the players from the observers, and that I think is a shame as it is part of the purpose of the games. 3 at a time may well solve this, and have people sign up to play and have votes on the games - top of the list starts when the next one finishes?

Certainly I'm trying my best with my comments in the games I've played, and I'd love more questions to come my way as I play :P

I also feel that the latest araban games are fantastic, as his video commentaries are a really great addition to the idea.

The games are such fun (for both players and observers), and such a great selling point of these forums, that it seems like a bad idea to restrict them.

Letting the users decide how many of them they'd like to see at the same time by implementing an "ignore topic" feature would be great.
To sig or not to sig, that is the question.

but we're not asking to restrict them.

we asking for the option to ignore them.

edit: oh, some people are asking to limit the number of games at once. that's a different request.

This would be a perfect option - kind of like an anti-subscription :)
