Study Journal

Post by Barrauss »

So I guess I'll give a hand at this. I'm coming back to go from a very long break (over half a year). I was approximately 1kyu on KGS when I left. I tend to be pretty undisciplined in games, meaning I don't read thoroughly, or bother to count, often only using intuition. My goals are naturally to get stronger, but mainly to become more orderly and disciplined.

Study plan:

Daily:
40 problems
Memorize 1 pro game.

Monday-Friday:
Play 1 serious game

Tuesdays and Thursdays:
Memorize 3 joseki and explore commonly played improper moves.

Saturday:
Memorize 4 joseki
Lesson with Li Ang

Sunday:
Memorize 5 joseki

Off-time:
Idle study on topic books and problems.

I'm currently working on solving all the problems on goproblems.com (I'm currently up to the 8kyu range).
The current book I'm reading is Positional Judgment High-Speed Game Analysis to develop my counting abilities and make it more of a second nature.

I'm surprised, am I correct in reading that this only has you playing one game per week (on Monday)? While you're stronger than I am, it seems intuitive to me to play more games than that if you're really focusing on the game. For example, I seem to better understand joseki if I try to fit it into a game or three, (though your capacity for memorization does seem much better than mine).
Someday I want to be strong enough to earn KGS[-].

I read it as "one serious game on each weekday, for a total of five each week."

Either way, this study plan puts my efforts to shame.

It is indeed meant to signify one game played each week day :)

Due to life getting in the way, I'm not quite able to devote as much time as I had foreseen to studying so I adjusted my study plan as followed: I now only study Joseki and pro games on the weekends. I finished High Speed Game Analysis and have commenced reading Reducing Territorial Frameworks.
