Hello, new beginner here

Post by Wind »

Hello.
I was interested in Go a few years ago and self studied for quite some time.
There was no one near me who play Go, so I played on IGS back then.
Yet my loses were way more than my wins. People really didn't give beginner a chance.
Then there was one single kyu player who demolished me easily and then leave the comment, "your no good" at the end of the game and left.
That was when I quit Go.

Now again I have my interest in Go.
I still don't have anyone to play with near me.
So I wish I could at least find someone nice to play with rather than random players on the servers.
I wish this time I could keep motivate long enough to at least reach 10 kyu.
Keep in mind, I'm very weak and can't beat GNU Go without handicaps.
Might need someone to hold my hand a walk me through some games.
Thanks.

Hello and welcome.

Work your way through this: http://homepages.gac.edu/~wolfe/fts/200 ... e/English/

Then you can usually find friendly people on KGS who would be willing to give you some teaching games, though I'd recommend first playing a bunch (like 100) of 9x9 games in "The Beginner's Room." You may have gotten some nasty remarks because you were a high kyu (20-30 kyu range) playing against low kyus (1-9 kyu range). The lower the kyu the stronger!

Why 100 9x9 games? They say you must lose 100 games before you start to improve, so you might as well get them over with quickly! You will learn very simple things on a 9x9 board like spotting ataris and then you can start worrying about tactics on a larger board.

Hi, welcome and welcome back to Go. :)
Most people on KGS are quite nice and helpful,
so I hope you can have some good experience there.

On KGS you will be able to find people who are near your strength. While you will encounter the occasional bozo, it won't take long until you meet some nice people to play with. If you have any questions about your games, post them on the forum. Folks here are eager to help!

Welcome back to the game!

I'd recommend joining the LifeIn19x19 and 'KGS Teaching Ladder' rooms on KGS, where you should be able to find friendly people who are more than willing to play a game with you, myself included. And don't let the occasional bad egg get your spirits down, there are plenty of decent people around as well. If you encounter a rude player, perhaps spend some time observing one of dsaun or Battousai's teaching games to get your confidence in humanity back up.

Good Luck!

EDIT:

Also please post your KGS handle if you're comfortable doing so, that way we can find you online or know who is asking us for a game.

Hello, thanks for all the replies.
I see that KGS might be more friendly than IGS.
I registered for KGS just now.
My handler is "AoiWind".
I'm kind of busy these days, but will still try some games on KGS sometime this week.
I play Go with the app, SmartGo, on my iPod Touch everyday.
I can win quite easily on 13x13 board, maybe due to the AI not being very strong.

Anyway, if anyone see me online, please do play some game with me.
Thanks.
